Toll in Hungary
Levying a toll in Hungary takes place on the highways M1 , M3 , M5 , M6 , M7 , M30 and M35 . There is a toll for all vehicles.
Prices
To use the motorways in Hungary, you need to purchase a virtual vignette (e-Matrica), which is available for a period of 10 days, a month or a year. In contrast to other countries, since January 1st, 2008 no sticker has to be stuck to the windshield: the control is carried out by cameras and computer systems. Here, the license plates given at the time of purchase are compared with the central data record. The proof of purchase should be kept for one year after it has expired. In the case of typing errors regarding the license plate number, a reminder from the Euro Parking Collection plc (EPC) from London can be expected after approx. 3 months. The replacement toll for a car is 85.42 euros including fees if you were caught without a vignette, or 39.50 euros for a typo in the license plate (as of 2016).
category | Validity period (2020) | |||
---|---|---|---|---|

- Since January 1, 2015, a separate vignette (category U2) whose prices correspond to category D1 must be purchased for trailers whose towing vehicle corresponds to category D2.
Forint rate: 1 euro = 290 forints
Car
For cars there are vignettes for ten days, a month or a year. The registration number of the car is saved and you only receive a confirmation. Nothing is stuck behind the windshield, the toll paid is checked electronically via the registered license plate. The license plate is saved without a separator, so that, for example, no distinction is made between "G-ULF1" and "GU-LF1". The toll can be paid at almost every petrol station. The toll fee can also be booked online with a credit card . When booking at Austrian petrol stations through the ÖAMTC , the equivalent of around a third higher fees are charged, which was justified in 2008 with fluctuating exchange rates to the forint and a "manipulation fee ".
truck
Since July 1, 2013, a route-dependent electronic toll has been levied in Hungary on defined sections of the road network (motorways, motorways and national roads) with a total length of 6,513 km. The amount of the route-dependent toll depends on the type of road used, the vehicle category (J2, J3, J4) and the environmental class.
category | Explanation |
---|---|
J2 | Trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 tons with 2 axles |
J3 | Trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 tons with 3 axles |
J4 | Trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 tons with 4 or more axles |
There are two different options for participating in the Hungarian truck toll system: automatic and manual route booking. In the case of manual route booking, a distinction must be made between logging in at a toll station terminal and logging in via an Internet portal from the HU-GO Internet portal.
The automatic log-in via a voluntarily installed on-board unit is a GPS / GPRS-supported toll. This means that the toll amount is determined by satellite navigation and sent to the central computer of the operator of the on-board device, e.g. B. GPS-ART Kft. This transmits the evaluated data to the Állami Autópálya Kezelő Zrt (AAK) so that it can collect the route toll. To do this, the shipping company first has its toll vehicles registered online with HU-GO. Installation can be carried out before and after registration by an authorized on-board contract partner.
Exemptions from the truck toll
The following organizations are exempt from paying the toll:
- Hungarian Army for Public Order Protection and NATO
- Bodies for the administrator of the public road network
- Bodies responsible for collecting and controlling tolls
- Civil protection
- Traffic authority
- Other bodies with rights to use
County-wide vignette
From January 1, 2015, nationwide stickers as well as the previously used nationwide stickers were introduced for all categories D1, D2, B2 and U, which can be used for one year for all toll roads in a certain county.
A spatially determined annual vignette for vehicles in categories D1M, D1, D2, U and B2, with which the toll road network of a county can be used. Several county-wide e-vignettes can be purchased for a vehicle. The period of validity of this authorization corresponds to the period of validity of the authorization valid for one year. This vignette is valid up to the first junction outside the administrative boundaries of the county. The details of the spatial validity of the county-wide vignettes can be viewed here based on the number of the junction and the milestone.
The following table shows which sections are available with which sticker:
control
The Állami Autópálya Kezelő Zrt is the control organization. The data collection required for the determination is carried out via 74 stationary toll control stations and with the help of around 100 vehicles.
The registration can thus be used to determine whether and which vehicle is authorized to use the road section.
