Pro Tell ( spelling : PROTELL ) is a non-profit association that is committed to liberal weapons legislation in Switzerland .

aims

In accordance with its own statutes, the Pro Tell association advocates the “indispensable right to own, acquire and carry weapons”. In the past, the club has repeatedly been compared to the American NRA . As a permanent consultant , the association issues opinions on new legal provisions and lobbies for the preservation of the shooting system and the militia system in Switzerland. In its public relations work, the association tries to counteract the increasingly negative perception and stigmatization of shooters - from its point of view .

The association appears in particular through the fight against an adaptation of the Swiss gun law to the weapons directive of the European Union . In 2005 he forced a referendum to vote on the implementation of the bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU on the association with Schengen and Dublin . In 2019 he supports the referendum against the implementation of the EU weapons directive in Swiss weapons law .

organization

The name and logo of the association refer to Wilhelm Tell , who, as a freedom fighter with a crossbow, represents a symbol for the association for the "liberal possession of weapons". According to the statutes, individuals and collective members can join the association. The members are advised on practical and legal questions about gun law.

In 2016 there was a scandal and staff changes at the top of the club. The previous president, Willy Pfund, resigned from office with immediate effect and spoke of a "coup". The next president, Hans-Peter Wüthrich, also resigned abruptly after eight months. The current president ad interim is the Valais National Councilor Jean-Luc Addor .

Controversy

Pro Tell hit the headlines in October 2017 when it became known that Ignazio Cassis had joined the association shortly after his election to the Federal Council . Due to severe criticism, Cassis canceled his membership with Pro Tell after a month.

Various Swiss media, including the NZZ am Sonntag , reported in April 2018 that the association was becoming increasingly radical. As a result, some bourgeois politicians distanced themselves from Pro Tell, including the Uri Council of States Josef Dittli and the Aargau National Councilor Sylvia Flückiger-Bäni .
