Hungary has been part of the Schengen area since December 21, 2007 and lies on the EU's external border , so that there are border crossings to both EU and non-EU countries at the state borders.
With the accession to the EU and the related integration of Hungary into the European internal market or into the customs union , no more customs controls have been carried out at the EU border crossings since joining the EU. Due to the transfer of the Schengen Agreement into the legal framework of the EU in 1999 by a protocol to the Treaty of Amsterdam , Hungary's accession to the EU also meant adopting the Schengen acquis . The legal regulations were subject to a transition period until December 21, 2007, the expiry of which meant the abolition of border controls and the abolition of border crossings at the state borders with other EU member states. At airports, border controls for flights within the Schengen area were abolished on March 30, 2008.
The length of the outer border is 2,009 km. This includes:
