history

The city has been inhabited since the early days, which archaeological finds prove. First the Illyrian Andizetes settled the place, traces of Roman settlement were found for the following period. The Roman settlement was called Mariniana . After the Great Migration, the Avars first settled down, then increasingly the Croats. In the 10th century the village came to the Kingdom of Croatia . After an attempt at conquest by the Hungarians had been repulsed, the Drau formed the rule border for a long time.

In the 11th century the area around the city came more and more under Hungarian influence. A document from the year 1057 mentions for the first time the city name St. Mihael (Donji Mihojac) after the church of St. Michael . Due to the union between Hungary and Croatia, which was concluded in 1102, the city belonged to Hungary from the 12th century.

After Turkish occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries, the city fell back to Croatia and Hungary and from 1918 to 1991 it belonged to Yugoslavia . Since Croatia's independence, it has been a small Croatian town with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants.
