License plate (Croatia)
A license plate ( Croatian registracijska oznaka or simply registracija ) is mandatory for all vehicles in Croatia . The Croatian license plate system was introduced on January 1st, 1992 and replaced the old Yugoslav license plates . The nationality code for Croatia is " HR " ( Croat . " Hr vatska" = Croatia). Immediately after Croatia's independence, many stickers with the abbreviation " CRO " appeared, which is otherwise an international identifierserves for Croatia. However, this abbreviation is not valid in road traffic. The Croatian administration decided on the already mentioned shorter combination of HR.
In December 2013, the Croatian Ministry of the Interior presented plans to introduce a new system. Since July 4, 2016, the license plates have been issued with the official euro field.
construction
Croatian license plates are issued for multi-lane vehicles in the dimensions 520 × 110 mm (one line) and 280 × 200 mm (two lines). The license plate begins with two letters that indicate the origin, followed by the Croatian coat of arms . Then there are three to four digits and another two letters at most. The following combinations are possible: AB 123 CD, AB 1234 C and AB 1234 CD. The license plates are framed at the top and bottom by two ribbons in the colors of the Croatian national flag . For a surcharge, custom labels are also possible, in which either any combination within the scheme or the entire label after the region abbreviation can be freely selected. Another special feature is the use of the letters Č, Š and Ž.
Two-wheelers
For single-track vehicles, three-line number plates measuring 200 × 200 mm or 100 × 150 mm are given, depending on the size.
Green font
License plates for foreigners living in Croatia, international organizations and vehicles that are only temporarily registered have green letters.
Red font
If vehicles or their load exceed a certain maximum level, they will receive license plates with red inscription. This variant of the license plate was adopted from the Yugoslav system and is now also found in Serbia and North Macedonia, for example .
Marks with PP and PV
In 2008 two more types of license plates were introduced. Transferable license plates show the letters PP for prijenosne pločice ( exchange number ) after the coat of arms , historical vehicles use PV for povijesno vozilo (historical vehicle). A maximum of four digits follow.
Export indicator
Also since 2008 there have been special export labels with yellow letters on a light green background. They start with the letters RH for Republika Hrvatska (Republic of Croatia). The coat of arms is followed by a maximum of four digits and a maximum of two letters.
Dealer identification
License plates for test drives or test drives are made of paper and are usually attached to the front or rear window. They show the word PROBA in a black and white checkered stripe on the left . This is followed by the abbreviation of origin, coat of arms and five digits in two groups. The maximum validity is five days.
Police license plate
The Croatian police use signs that consist of two groups of three digits each. In between is the Croatian coat of arms. The font color here is dark blue, making the signs similar to those of the Macedonian police.
Military license plate
License plates of the Croatian Armed Forces have a yellow background and begin with the letters HV for Croat. Hrvatska vojska (German Croatian Army). Otherwise they have the same structure as the usual number plates. Military police signs also begin with HV and end with VP for Croat. vojna policija (German army police).
Diplomatic plates
Diplomatic license plates are particularly conspicuous. They show yellow letters on a light blue background. At the beginning there are three digits that indicate the country of origin, followed by one of the letters A ( diplomatic corps ), C ( consular corps ), E (business representation), M (foreign mission) or P (press). The sign ends with another three digits. There are hyphens between the numbers and the letter. In the case of two-line license plates, the letter is placed to the right of the numbers in the middle of the plate.
history
Until 1918, today's Croatia was part of Austria-Hungary . The symbols of the dual monarchy showed a letter in black (Austria) or red (Hungary) and a consecutive number. Dalmatia , which belonged to Austria , had the letter M , while C stood for the rest of the country in Hungary. After the break-up of Austria-Hungary, Croatia fell to what was later to become Yugoslavia and from then on used Yugoslav license plates . With the reform of the system in 1961, the region abbreviations, some of which are still used today, were created.
Special case of Krajina
During the Croatian War in 1991, the Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) was proclaimed on about a third of the territory of today's Croatia. In this area controlled by the RSK, own license plates were issued in the early 1990s, which were very similar to the Yugoslav and Serbian-Montenegrin ones. They showed the region code consisting of two letters, followed by the stylized flag of the RSK and two groups of digits. With the integration of the RSK into the Republic of Croatia in 1995, the system changed over to the Croatian system.
The codes BM ( Beli Manastir ), GN ( Glina ), KE ( Korenica ), KNN ( Knin ), MK ( Markušica ), OK ( Okučani ), VN ( Vojnić ) and VU ( Vukovar ) were used.
Military vehicles in the Serbian Krajina used license plates that began with the flag and the reduced Cyrillic letters СВК (SVK, Srpska vojska Krajine, Serbian Army of Krajina ) underneath. Another Cyrillic letter and four digits followed.
Registration districts
In Croatia there are a total of 34 approval districts. These are not based on the division into counties (of which there are 21).
