License plate (Lithuania)
The current Lithuanian license plates were introduced after regaining independence in 1991. They usually show black letters on a white background and correspond to the pan-European dimensions of 520 × 110 mm. The label usually consists of three letters followed by three digits. A variant of the German DIN font is used as the font . Rear and front license plates are identical.
Construction of the shield (since 2004)
On the left band there is a blue field with the European stars and the nationality symbol LT , which was introduced on September 20, 2004 and thus shortly after Lithuania joined the European Union on May 1, 2004. A sticker of the main inspection ( Lithuanian TA = techninė apžiūra) and a hologram sticker appear between the letters and numbers . In addition to the standard size, there are signs in US size and two smaller formats for two-wheelers. The exact origin of the vehicle cannot be read from the signs.
history
1932 to 1940
In 1932, white license plates with black letters were introduced. They showed a letter or two that indicated the region and other digits. Lowercase letters were also used as abbreviations, for example Šm for the Šiauliai district.
1946 to 1991
Soviet license plates were used in the Lithuanian SSR . In the first system from 1946 with black lettering on a yellow background, the abbreviations ЛС, ЛТ, ЛУ, ЛЧ, ЛШ, ЛЭ, ЛЩ, ЛЮ and ЛЛ were intended for cars and ЛС, ЛТ, ЛШ and ЛЭ for two-wheelers. After the reform of 1958, the design changed to white letters on a black background. The letter combination ЛИ (LI) (according to Russ. Литва) was from now on for the Lithuanian SSR. The abbreviations ЛЛ (LL) and ЛК (LK) have been reserved as an extension. Different vehicle categories were coded with another letter. After the change to black font and white background in 1980, the abbreviations ЛИ (LI) and ЛК (LK) were used. In 1991, some Soviet license plates were issued with Latin letters.
1991 to 2004
From 1991 to September 20, 2004, instead of the European stars, the national flag of Lithuania could be seen in the blue bar on the left. Between May and September 2004 the two stickers appeared immediately after the nationality field and thus before the actual combination.
The middle of three letters indicated the regional origin until the end of 2003. Since no new number was required when selling a vehicle to another region, regional labeling was never carried out consistently.
The approval districts (until 2003):
- A - Alytus district
 - J - Tauragė district , J to Jurbarkas
 - K - Kaunas District
 - L - Klaipeda district
 - M - Marijampolė district
 - P - Panevėžys district
 - S - Šiauliai district
 - T - Telšiai district
 - U - Utena district
 - V - Vilnius District
 - The letter R indicated a government vehicle.

Special designs
Different from the standard version, there are various special codes that are also available in various formats.
Trailers and two-wheelers
Trailer license plates only show two letters and three digits. Two-wheeled license plates consist of three digits followed by two letters. For smaller two-wheelers, license plates with two digits and three letters are given. However, this combination is only output in the smallest format.
Desired license plate
For a fee, a desired license plate can be issued from the permitted digits and letters, e.g. B. HALLO. In this case, the two stickers are located directly after the euro field.
Taxis
Taxis have different license plates. They have a yellow basic color and show the letter T (lit. taksi) and five digits. The two badges are also located immediately after the euro field.
Temporary license plates
Temporary license plates have red letters on a white background. There are dealer license plates that begin with P or R and at the end represent the year of validity with two digits (e.g. P1234 12), as well as license plates for the import and export of vehicles with five digits and two letters (e.g. B. 12345AB). The latter are valid for 90 days.
Military license plate
Lithuanian Armed Forces vehicles have a black background and white lettering. The Lithuanian flag can be seen on the left edge. The combination consists of two letters, three digits and one more letter.
Diplomatic plates
Lithuanian diplomatic plates have a green base color, white letters and do not show a euro field. They consist of a total of six digits according to the pattern 12 3 456. The first two digits indicate the country of origin, the single digit in the middle the status of the owner. The current diplomatic signs have been issued since October 11, 2004. Before that, the license plates first showed the letter D , followed by three digits. At the end, two digits indicated the year of approval.
Status of the vehicle (since October 2004):
- 1 = Head of foreign representations
 - 2 = foreign representations
 - 3 = employees of foreign representations and their family members
 - 4 = employees of foreign representations and their family members
