The license plate of Iceland have since 1990 a white color and consist of two blue letters and three blue numbers. There is a sticker between the letters and numbers. Since 2004, they have been showing the national flag of Iceland and the national symbol IS on the left edge . As a result of the growing number of vehicles, a new combination based on the model was AB C12started in 2007 . The combinations are assigned continuously and do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the origin of the vehicle. In addition, there is the possibility of a desired number plate, in which the combination of characters can be freely selected, the only condition: no duplications with already assigned number plates. Many car owners still choose the previous abbreviations, while others choose completely free combinations, e.g. B. your own name (e.g. GISLI ).

Along with Germany and some Balkan states, Iceland is one of the few countries that allows country-specific letters (e.g. Þ or Ð) on regular license plates.

In addition, there are a number of special license plates in Iceland that stand out due to their color design. License plates for commercially used vehicles have red letters and a red rhombus on the left edge . Yellow license plates symbolize that the vehicle can fill up with tax-exempt fuel. This is the case with fire brigade vehicles, for example . Temporary license plates have a red background and black font. They always start with the letters RN

Diplomatic license plates have a green background and white text. They start with the letters CD followed by a letter indicating the country of origin and a two-digit number.
