Sauðárkrókur [ ˈsøyːðaur̥ˌkʰrouːkʏr ] is an Icelandic city ​​with 2612 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).

It is both the largest settlement in the larger municipality of Skagafjörður , of which it has been part since 1998, and the largest city in Northwest Iceland at all.

Located in northwest Iceland, Sauðárkrókur stretches to the north, tapering on the southern bank of the Skagafjörður fjord, west of the mouth of the Vestari- Héraðsvötn .

history

Sauðárkrókur was created in 1857 as a trading center. The first permanent settlement did not begin until 1871. Sauðárkrókur has had town charter since 1947. In 1998 it was merged with ten rural communities to form the municipality of Skagafjörður.

The city can be easily reached from the ring road R1 via the Sauðárkróksbraut S75. The distance to Reykjavík is 290 kilometers by road. There is a year-round connection to the Reykjavík- Akureyri bus route . In the summer months Sauðárkrókur Airport has two daily flights from the capital Reykjavík.

economy

Sauðárkrókur is the service center in the region around Skagafjörður. The main industries in the city are fishing , trade and industry. In addition to fish and shrimp processing companies and a dairy, there are a large number of small businesses, including a stone wool factory. In addition, the last Icelandic tannery is located in the place.

The area is famous as the Mecca of the Icelandic horse , as nowhere in Iceland are there more horse breeders and horses than here.

Culture

The local museum Minjahús housed u. a. the oldest sewing machine in Iceland from 1857, as well as a large collection of other household items, musical instruments and tools. However, the museum had to close, the building has since been sold by the municipality. An alternative location has not yet been found (2019). In the city is the sculpture of an Icelandic horse by the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson .

Some old houses and the wooden church from 1892 are worth seeing. Hotel Tindastóll from 1884 is considered the oldest hotel in Iceland and one of the oldest wooden houses on the island. Driftwood and stones from the sea were mainly used for the renovation of the hotel. It was built in 1820 from Norwegian wood as a warehouse in Hofsós, first moved to Grafarós in 1833 and then later to Sauðárkrókur. It has been used as a hostel since 1884. According to her own statements, Marlene Dietrich is said to have stayed here.

To the south, on the way to Varmahlíð, is ​​the Glaumbær museum farm .
