Norðurland vestra (German western north country ; ISO 3166-2 code IS-5 ) is one of the eight regions of Iceland . It is in the north of the country. Its administrative seat is Sauðárkrókur in the municipality of Skagafjörður . On January 1, 2019, 7,227 inhabitants lived in an area of ​​12,592 km², the population density was less than 1 inh / km².

In June 2006 the town of Siglufjörður moved to Fjallabyggð in the region of Norðurland eystra, which is why the region lost its inhabitants.
