Teresa Maria Cristina di Borbone (born March 14, 1822 in Naples , † December 28, 1889 in Porto ) was a princess of Bourbon-Sicily and the last empress of Brazil .

Life

Teresa Cristina was born as the youngest daughter of King Francis I of the Two Sicilies and Maria Isabel of Spain .

On September 4, 1843, she married Emperor Peter II of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro , a son of Emperor Peter I of Brazil and Archduchess Maria Leopoldine of Austria . Teresa Maria Christina was the cousin of Peter's mother Maria Leopoldine of Austria, who died prematurely, and was a second aunt. The wife of Emperor Franz I and first Empress of Austria, Maria Theresa (herself a granddaughter of her grandmother of the same name, Maria Theresa of Austria), was the grandmother of Peter II of Brazil .

Empress Maria Theresa and Teresa Cristina's father, King Francis I of the Two Sicilies , were siblings. As a result, Teresa Cristina is one of the numerous great-grandchildren of Maria Theresa of Austria and of the Roman-German Emperor Franz Stephan of Lorraine .

The marriage with Peter II was not good at first, but it got better over time. Peter II, who grew up without a mother, greatly appreciated the maternal and loving manner of his wife. Rejection turned into understanding, later benevolence and attention.

Teresa Cristina died on December 28, 1889 at the age of 67 in Porto, Portugal. She was buried in the São Vicente de Fora, in Lisbon. In 1920 her remains were transferred to the imperial city of Petrópolis in Brazil .
