  • April 22nd : At the Oklahoma Land Run , thousands of Anglo-American settlers race to get as good a piece of land as possible in the western part of the Indian Territory, later the state of Oklahoma . In the days before, some colonists illegally crossed the border to the Cherokee outlet and secretly staked out parcels of land for themselves. The Oklahoma Land Run is considered to be one of the historic cornerstones that symbolically mark the end of the US pioneering era , which is often referred to as the Wild West in today's popular culture .
  • A few days after the Oklahoma Land Run , a provisional government was installed in what would become the Oklahoma Territory the following year .
  • October 2 : The United States holds the first Pan-American conference to secure its influence in Latin America .
