Noble Lee Sissle (born July 10, 1889 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † December 17, 1975 in Tampa , Florida ) was an African-American singer, violinist, band leader and songwriter.

Sissle, whose father also worked as an organist, initially sang in minstrel and gospel groups . From 1917 to 1919 he did military service as a drum major in the band of the 369th Infantry Regiment (the Harlem Hellfighter Band ). After James Reese Europe's death, he took over his band, which was one of the first jazz-related ragtime orchestras before 1920. He then performed with Eubie Blake as the "Dixie Duo" and wrote the lyrics to many of Blake's ragtime songs. The greatest success of the two was the 1921 Broadway musical Shuffle Along , in which u. a. Josephine Baker performed as a dancer. They rewrote the waltz song from the show I'm Just Wild About Harry in 4/4 time as an election song for Harry S. Truman in the 1940s .

In 1922 they were successful in the charts with the Spencer Williams composition "Arkansas Blues (A Down Home Chant)" (# 10); 1923 followed for Victor Records rehearsed " Down Hearted Blues " by Alberta Hunter (# 13) and Movies ( Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake Sing Snappy Songs ). In 1924 the revue The Chocolate Dandies followed ; In 1925/26 Sissle toured Europe with Blake and William Thornton Blue , where he stayed until 1928 and performed with French bands. Eisenhower . He then moved to Florida.
