Down Hearted Blues (often also Downhearted Blues ) is the title of a popular blues songs , the Alberta Hunter and Lovie Austin wrote together.
Hunter, who was also active as a singer, often played the piece live as part of an engagement at the Dreamland Café in Chicago . a. with Joe King Oliver before making a first recording of the song on Paramount Records in 1922 .
The song didn't really get famous until a year later, when Bessie Smith recorded it for her debut single . Clarence Williams can be heard on the piano with Smith . The single became a national success and sold over two million copies. This success laid the foundation for Bessie Smith's fame as one of the most successful blues and jazz singers.
So it is Smith's cover version and not the original version of Hunter, which was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress , was awarded a Grammy Hall of Fame and was named by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of those songs that were decisive for rock 'n' roll .
Many other musicians have tried their hand at the piece, including Fletcher Henderson , Son House , Eva Taylor , Lucille Hegamin and Ella Fitzgerald .
Lyrically, the blues deals with the difficulties and pain of unrequited love.
