history
The Czech name Vlkanov (vlk = wolf) must be considered original and was probably onomatopoeic Germanized as early as 1600 by inserting i to avoid clusters of consonants that are uncommon in German, by replacing -ov with -au (as in: Vranov -> Frohnáu, Smolov -> Schmoláu, Pařezov -> Parisáu) and by shifting the stress from the first (in Czech the stress is always on the first syllable) to the last syllable: Wilkenáu.
When Wilkenau was first mentioned in 1359, it belonged to Zdenko von Hirschstein . In 1421 Wilkenau was committed to the Chotieschauer monastery by King Sigismund .
Before 1621 Wilkenau belonged to the Ronsperger rule, which Peter von Schwanberg held until his death in 1620. Because of his participation in the Prague uprising, his possessions were confiscated from the tax authorities in 1621 , including Wilkenau.
In 1656 8 farmers, one Chalupner, 5 gardeners, 13 teams, 15 cows, 37 young cattle, 108 sheep and 54 pigs were registered in Wilkenau. In 1789 Wilkenau had 33 houses, in 1839 53 houses, 369 inhabitants, a farm, a sheep farm, an inn and a cladding shop.
In 1913 there were 357 residents in Wilkenau, two inns, a shop, a tobacconist, a tailor, a blacksmith and a merchant's shop . It was parish and schooled in Ronsperg. Some courageous men from Wilkenau built a branch line to Wilkenau on their own initiative, despite the rejection by the municipal administration, so that in 1945 all houses in the village were electrified.
After the Munich Agreement , Wilkenau was added to the German Reich and until 1945 belonged to the Bischofteinitz district .
Today (2013) Vlkanov has an inn, a public library and a children's playground.
