history

Zahořany was first mentioned in a document in 1239 as the property of the Kladruby monastery . The Zahořany manor was divided into several parts in the 14th century. The administrator of the Chotěšov monastery , Jindřich Kytice, bought the various shares in the middle of the 15th century and reunited them. The seat of power was the Zahořany Fortress, which was transformed into a Renaissance chateau in the 16th century. Until the first half of the 17th century, Zahořany remained an independent estate. After the battle of the White Mountain , the imperial general Johann Philipp Cratz von Scharffenstein acquired the Záhořany estate and added it to the Riesenberg with Kauth rule . The castle then served as a farm building. Cratz fell out with Albrecht von Waldstein and went over to Swedish services. In 1634 he was captured in the battle of Nördlingen and executed the following year in Vienna. His widow Anna Elisabeth left the heavily indebted Riesenberg rule to her brother Wilhelm Colonna von Fels. In 1641, Swedish troops captured and devastated Riesenberg Castle . The berni rula from 1654 lists 24 properties for Zahořany. Eleonore Barbara Maria Cratz von Scharffenstein, married Countess von Solms-Rödelheim , who had inherited her father's property, was not able to rebuild the destroyed castle. In 1670 the widow married Georg Wenzel Czernin von und zu Chudenitz , who sold the Riesenberg estate to Wolf Maximilian Laminger von Albenreuth in 1676 . Laminger gained the reputation of a cruel landlord by suppressing the Chod uprising of 1693. In 1697, his heirs sold the lordships of Chodenschloß , Kauth and Zahořany to Heinrich Georg Count von Stadion. The Counts of Stadion raised the allodial rule of Kauth and Chodenschloß to a family affiliation. In the Theresian land register from 1757, 28 farmsteads are shown for Zahořany.

After the abolition of patrimonial formed Zahořany / Zahorán 1850 a municipality in the judicial district Taus. From 1868 the municipality belonged to the Taus district . In 1930, 552 people lived in the 111 houses of Zahořany. On January 1, 1985, Bořice, Hříchovice, Oprechtice (with Prudice and Pláně), Sedlice and Stanětice were incorporated.
