Kdyně ( German Neugedein ) is a small town in Okres Domažlice in the Czech Republic .

geography

Kdyně is located in the Neugedeiner furrow in western Bohemia , to the southwest lies the Neumarker Pass . The city center is on a hill between the Zahořanský potok and Kojetický potok. The road I / 22 between Domažlice and Klatovy runs through Kdyně, the Janovice nad Úhlavou – Domažlice railway runs south .

history

A settlement in the area of today's Kdyně is first mentioned in 1384, at that time it belonged to the Riesenberg domain ( Rýzmberk in Czech ). In 1508 Kdyně is referred to as a town, but it is about an older settlement that burned down in the middle of the 16th century and was later referred to as Stará Kdyně ( Altgedein ). The current settlement has been occupied since 1586, it also belonged to the Riesenberg rule. From 1697 the city belonged to the Counts Stadion , in 1840 it received city rights. A district court existed there from 1850 to 1949, and the district authorities from 1855 to 1868.

Since the end of the 17th century, Kdyně has been a focus of the textile industry. The oldest textile factory in Bohemia was founded here in 1678. In the middle of the 18th century, the local factory was the largest employer in West Bohemia with 500 employees and more than 6,000 homeworkers.

Community structure

The city Kdyně consists of the districts Branišov ( Branschau ) Dobříkov ( Dobschikau ) Hluboká ( Hluboken , 1939-45 downfield ), Kdyně, Modlin ( Modlin ), Nové Chalupy ( New Chalupen ) Podzámčí ( Giant Mountains ), Prapořiště ( Brown Busch ) , Smržovice ( Smerschowitz ) and Starec ( Starz ). Basic settlement units are Branišov, Dobříkov, Hluboká, Kdyně, Modlín, Nové Chalupy, Podzámčí, Prapořiště, Smržovice, Starec and Vítovky ( New Hluboken ).

The urban area is divided into the cadastral districts Branišov na Šumavě, Dobříkov na Šumavě, Hluboká u Kdyně, Kdyně, Podzámčí, Prapořiště, Smržovice and Starec.

Attractions

The St. Nicholas Church was built in the second half of the 14th century. The onion dome of the subsequently added tower dates from 1734. In the years 1763 to 1768 the church was expanded and rebuilt, the baroque style probably took place in several stages. The nave has a flat roof, only the choir is vaulted. Near the church is a small chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows from the beginning of the 19th century.

Remains of the Nový Herštejn castle . The castle is connected to the Velhartice family who built the castle as early as the first half of the 14th century. In 1475 the castle was besieged by the troops of the Bavarian princes, with whom the Lords of Hirschenstein were in constant feud; after the attack, Jan von Hirschenstein was captured by the Bavarians. Shortly afterwards the castle itself was so badly damaged that it was no longer habitable. From the ruins of the mighty is Palas received.
