geography
The castle ruins are located west of the state road II / 184 between Němčice ( Nemetz ) and Kdyně ( Neugedein ) on the Herštýn ( Herrnstein ; 681 m nm) in the Branžovský hvozd ( Branschauer Forest ) in the Švihovská vrchovina ( Schwihauer Uplands ). The Herštýn nature reserve extends around the Nový Herštejn ruins. The settlement of Nový Herštejn is located at the southern foot of the castle hill. The Bukovský potok rises to the southeast.
history
The castle is connected to the family of the Lords of Welhartitz ( Páni z Velhartic ), who built it in the second half of the 13th century by Bušek II of Welhartitz. In 1475 the castle was besieged by the troops of the Bavarian dukes , with whom Jan Herštýnský von Welhartitz was in constant feud; after the attack he was captured by the Bavarians. The castle itself, which was sold to the Lords of Riesenberg a short time later , was so badly damaged that it was no longer habitable.
