Live and act

Williams, whose mother died early, grew up with his godmother, the brothel owner Lulu White, in the legendary Mahagony Hall (to which he later dedicated his Mahagony Hall Stomp ). He studied music at St. Charles University in his hometown and was soon a respected ragtime pianist

In 1907 Williams gave concerts in Chicago ; around 1916 he moved to New York City . There he wrote the first songs with Anton Lada from the Louisiana Five and other songs with Fats Waller , such as Squeeze Me (1918). In 1921 he wrote the revue Put and Take with James Tim Brymn and Perry Bradford . In 1925 he accompanied Josephine Baker on her first European tour, only to return to America after three years. For the next several years he worked with Lonnie Johnson and Teddy Bunn . In 1936 he went to England, where he worked with Benny Carter ( When Lights Are Low ). He also spent a large part of the 1950s in Sweden, only returning to the USA in 1957.

Williams is the composer of numerous jazz and blues titles - from him, for example, Basin Street Blues , I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None o 'This Jelly-Roll , I Ain't Got Nobody , Royal Garden Blues , I've Found a New Baby , Everybody Loves My Baby , Tishomingo Blues or Careless Love , some of which he wrote with (the unrelated) Clarence Williams .

Williams was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970 .
