The Gloggnitz train station is the train station for the town of Gloggnitz in Lower Austria. It is located on the Südbahn and was the terminus of the Südbahn until the Semmering Railway opened in 1854. The reception building has been a listed building since 2017 ( list entry ).

The station is particularly important for operations on the mountain line of the Semmering Railway. At the time of the early steam operation after the opening of the line, all trains in Gloggnitz were switched to the Engerth locomotives of the later southern line 19, which were procured for the mountain line . In addition, the trains in Gloggnitz were divided, as initially neither leader nor push locomotives were permitted on Semmering . From 1867, push locomotives were exceptionally permitted for freight trains and from 1870 also for passenger trains. Like the switch to mountain locomotives before, the push locomotives at Gloggnitz station were added to the trains heading south. From the 1930s onwards, leader locomotives were also permitted, some of which were provided before Gloggnitz. With the electrification of 1958, push locomotives coupled to the train were banned due to the difficult operating conditions and only leader locomotives were used. Overrun operation was only permitted again after being equipped with train radio . The Gloggnitz station is still used today to provide lead and push locomotives, excess locomotives are regularly switched by locomotive trains between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag at the southern end of the mountain route. Particularly heavy freight trains are still shared at Gloggnitz station today.

For decades, Gloggnitz station was also a long-distance stop for many long-distance trains on the Semmering Railway. For example, in the summer timetable of 1938 there were direct connections from Gloggnitz via Semmering to Merano , Zagreb and Rome . Even after the Second World War, Gloggnitz was served by long-distance trains. In the winter of 1974/75, for example, the D 251 “Ljubljana-Express” and the D253 to Belgrade and the Ex255 “Balkan-Express” stopped with through coaches to Athens. In the last few years the importance of Gloggnitz as a long-distance stop has decreased. Until 2015 a Railjet to Prague stopped in Gloggnitz, since the 2015/16 timetable change only one pair of express trains stops.
