The Mürzzuschlag train station is in Styria . It is located on the Südbahn and is the southern starting point of the historic Semmering mountain route , which is a World Heritage Site in Austria . In addition, the long-distance traffic stop is planned as the starting point for the Semmering Base Tunnel , which is currently under construction .

history

Mürzzuschlag with railway line around 1900.

Mürzzuschlag got its first railway connection through the 94-kilometer stretch from Mürzzuschlag to Graz. After just one year of construction, it was officially opened on October 21, 1844. The first trip took three hours and 21 minutes.

Ten years later, on June 7, 1854, the first scheduled passenger train ran on the Semmering Railway planned by Carl von Ghega . As the location of an important boiler house, Mürzzuschlag became an important railway town. The locomotives stationed here strengthened the heavy trains over the Semmering.

In 1879 an eleven kilometer long local railway was opened from Mürzzuschlag to Neuberg an der Mürz . Since the planned extensions to the Leobersdorfer Bahn or to the Mariazellerbahn never came about, the so-called Neuberger Bahn was primarily used to transport goods to the sawmill of the Austrian Federal Forests in Neuberg. Railway operations were finally shut down in 1996, and the Ministry of Transport finally closed it in 2007. Since September 2010, the R5 cycle path has been built on the railway line and opened on June 19, 2011.

In 2008 the Mürzzuschlag train station was equipped with a new electronic signal box. After a year and a half of construction, the twelve million euro investment was put into operation.

On the occasion of the construction of the Semmering Base Tunnel , the Mürzzuschlag train station is also to be renovated and modernized during its construction period. Of the 160 million euros that will be invested in this construction phase, parts of it will flow into a new Park & Ride facility with e-charging stations , which will be used from 2021, as well as into the renovation of the station building and the forecourt (bus bays, taxi stands and short-term parking spaces , as well as covered bicycle parking spaces and moped parking spaces). The latter work should be completed by the end of 2023. During the renovation, special attention was paid to the preservation of historical monuments, whereby the external appearance should resemble that of the early 20th century. In addition, a modern maintenance base with a track hall for equipment for later tunnel maintenance, as well as a separate track for a rescue train, is to be built on the north side of the station . In order to enable smooth rail traffic, the track area will be adapted so that the line of the Semmering base tunnel is integrated into the existing line of the southern railway, for which the track system has to be partially renewed. A total of nine kilometers of track are to be laid, 31 switches installed and 41,000 tons of ballast required. The renovation will be carried out during ongoing operations in around 100 construction phases.

Transport and operation

Timetable Vienna - Mürzzuschlag from 1914

The Mürzzuschlag train station has a frequency of around 1900 passengers a day.

Mürzzuschlag is the scheduled stop of long-distance trains on their journey from Vienna to Graz . In local transport there are train connections from Mürzzuschlag via the Semmering to Payerbach-Reichenau , via the Südbahn to Bruck an der Mur and Graz, and via the Mur-Mürz-Furche to Friesach .

Around 220 train journeys and 500 shunting journeys are handled here every day. 85 signals and 67 points are operated via the electronic interlocking. In March 2019, the main work began in Mürzzuschlag in the course of the station renovation, the renewal of the track systems, and the construction of the western tunnel portal of the Semmering Base Tunnel (SBT). Due to the construction site, the operating procedures in the station area had to be changed.

On August 3, 2019, the train subsidy was discontinued in Mürzzuschlag. Since then, trains heading north (to Vienna) for their journey on the Semmering Railway, necessary for operational reasons, have been added to the Kapfenberg station with the leader locomotives and push-powered vehicles. In the case of trains going south (to Bruck an der Mur), pre-tensioning vehicles in the Spital am Semmering station or push-in vehicles are disconnected shortly after passing through the Semmering peak tunnel in the Semmering substation.

Platforms and passenger tunnels

Platforms 2–3 (right) 4–5 (left)

At Mürzzuschlag train station there is a house platform (1), a head platform (11) to the north and two platform islands (2/3 and 4/5). All platforms have an edge height of 38 centimeters. The approximately 370 meter long island platform 2/3 is covered over a length of around 120 meters, the approximately 200 meter long island platform 4/5 is roofed over a length of 45 meters. Both platform roofs are concrete structures with rounded corners.

The platforms are accessed via a four-meter-wide pedestrian tunnel. In the customer area of the reception building, two stairs lead into the passenger tunnel, both island platforms each have a staircase leading to the passenger tunnel that is not barrier-free.

Station building

The station building is located south of the track system. It consists of separate multi-storey structures that are connected to one another via single-storey structures. The actual reception building is the easternmost part of the ensemble. Here the concourse with waitable are ticket offices and automatic machine , toilet facilities, and access to the main platform and pedestrian tunnel located.

Sepp Tezak described the station ensemble as follows when it was founded:

"On the reception building, second class, there is the clock tower that is common in larger train stations and a double-track passenger hall with a covered connecting path between the two objects."

- Sepp Tezak

Since then, however, the buildings have been changed several times, for example the clock tower is no longer preserved.

From April 2013, the Mürzzuschlag train station was modernized by almost 5 million euros. The elevation of the main platform (platform 1) to 55 cm, elevators and a guidance system for the blind improve the accessibility of the station. The work was completed in December 2013.

Since March 2019, the station area of Mürzzuschlag has been undergoing extensive renovation as part of the west portal of the Semmering base tunnel to be built. The station will be completely barrier-free and the signage will be renewed in a user-friendly way. The forecourt is to meet the requirements in future with bus bays, taxi stands and short-term parking spaces. In the future, two-wheelers will find covered parking spaces directly on the forecourt in front of the house platform.

Boiler house area

There are two locomotive sheds in the former boiler house area at Mürzzuschlag station . The locomotives were serviced here and prepared for use on the Semmering Railway. Today, both systems are used by the Southern Railway Museum.

The round locomotive shed was built in 1873 by Wilhelm von Flattich , architect and structural engineering director of the Südbahngesellschaft as part of a major expansion of the Semmering Railway. During the Second World War , the building was enlarged due to the greater length of the steam locomotives. In 2005 the roundhouse was put out of service after 132 years. In 2006 it was placed under protection by the Federal Monuments Office:

“The combination of the locomotive assembly hall with transfer platform (SÜDBAHN Museum) and round locomotive shed with turntable forms the last remaining system of its kind from the heyday of the railroad industry around 1900 in Austria. ... The two structures, including the transfer table and turntable, are therefore of particular historical and cultural importance. "

- Federal Monuments Office Vienna, June 30, 2006

The so-called "New Mount", a rectangular hall built in 1919, now houses the exhibition rooms of the Southern Railway Museum.

As part of the extensive renovation that has been taking place since March 2019, the northern area of the station is also being upgraded. A Park & Ride facility for 370 parking spaces and with e-charging stations is being built. The southern railway museum is optically the focus. A maintenance base with a track hall for tunnel maintenance equipment is being built on the north side of the station. In order to integrate the new line of the Semmering Base Tunnel in the Mürzzuschlag station into the existing line of the Semmering Railway, the track systems are being adapted and renewed. A total of 9 kilometers of track will be laid, 31 switches installed and 41,000 tons of ballast required. The renovation will be carried out during ongoing operations and in around 100 construction phases. The construction work in the Mürzzuschlag station area is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Around 160 million euros will be invested in the construction work in the portal area of the SBT, in the construction of operating buildings, in the expansion of the track systems, as well as in the renovation and modernization of the station.
