The S-Bahn Styria (initially also called “S-Bahn Graz” ) is a local transport project that connects the greater Graz area and the central area of Upper Styria with the rest of Styria . Work on this project has been going on since 1998. Commissioning took place on December 9, 2007.
Completion should take place by 2026. In the future, the S-Bahn will offer better connections every 15 or 30 minutes, as well as air-conditioned and low-floor trains. At the moment (2017 timetable), for example, there is only an hourly train between the airport and the city of Graz on Sundays. The 30-minute intervals are maintained by the regional bus service. By making local rail transport more attractive, it was possible to significantly increase the number of passengers, which corresponds to the goal of counteracting the increased use of motorized individual traffic using public transport.
Lines
The line names of the S-Bahn in the greater Graz area are based on the existing regional bus corridors of the Verbund line , in which three-digit line names with identical hundreds depending on the direction of travel are assigned. The S-Bahn main lines are each designated with one digit, branch lines branching off with two digits. In the case of the latter, the tens remains unchanged and the ones digit is counted continuously starting from Graz. A color is assigned to each line.

vehicles
Vehicles of the types ÖBB 5022 , ÖBB 4023 , ÖBB 4024 , ÖBB 4744 , CityShuttle push-pull trains , StB 4062 , StB 4481 , StB 5062 , StB 5047 , GKB DoStos and GKB 5063 are currently used for operation.
Former vehicles
Although the S-Bahn Styria is a relatively young S-Bahn system, since the start of the S-Bahn there have been numerous vehicle decommissioning, mostly due to the purchase of new vehicles.
- On the lines , , , , and as well as on the regional train line (today ) were in the first years of the S-Bahn in the summer months still streaking cars found, they were used because they had extra space for bicycles. They were in use until some CityShuttle wagons were converted into the well-known RegioBike wagons with a bicycle compartment.
- GKB used the class 5070 multiple units built in the 1980s on lines and until 2013 . They were replaced by Stadler GTW (series 5063).
- The StB railcar ET14 (then STLB) ran on the line until 2009, which was taken over by the SZU and was used there until 1996 with the number BDe 4/4 91 on the Zurich S-Bahn line S4 . It was parked and sold as a result of an engine failure.
- In the lead up to Easter 2014 school transport former Swiss standard cars. They have been replaced by CityShuttle cars bought by ÖBB.
Expansion stages
The expansion to the S-Bahn takes place in three steps. The objectives of phases 1 and 2 have currently been implemented and the S-Bahn is in operation.
Phase 1
With this step (2007/08), rail traffic was made more attractive by increasing the timetable in the morning peak (towards the center) and in the evening traffic (to the regions). Since the timetable change 9 December 2007, on lines , , , , and already largely clocked. Lines and were also in operation from this point in time with a condensed timetable, but not yet as S-Bahn lines, but as R530 and R531 and not clocked.
The newly built Graz Don Bosco station is an important transfer point for train passengers coming from the south ( southern line ) and east ( east line ) in the city of Graz, as a number of bus lines stop directly below the station, relieving the main station and faster transport Enable city center.
Phase 2
Since June 2010, additional trains have been running every half hour on the between Graz and Bruck / Mur and between Graz and Spielfeld-Straß. S-Bahn trains run every hour, at rush hour every half hour or, if necessary, every 15 minutes. In addition, regional express trains increase this offer.
Since December 12, 2010, the has been running from Graz to Wies-Eibiswald via the Südbahn and Koralm Railway instead of via Lieboch as before . The first section of the Koralm Railway was put into operation, the new Hengsberg stop was served and the journey time on the Graz – Deutschlandsberg connection was shortened from currently 55 to 40 minutes. The main route via Lieboch will be served by the new line .
Phase 3
In the third and final phase from 2012, all rail connections to and from Graz are to be equipped with modern railcars. In addition, the stops and the design of the station will be standardized. A customer-friendly information system based on international standards should support the passengers. On single-track lines, the expansion of stations and the construction of switches - especially on the Styrian Eastern Railway - are necessary. 18 new railcars are purchased. Furthermore, the Upper Styrian central area from Kapfenberg to Leoben is to be developed in the final stage. For this purpose, a line was initially planned, which is the only line that does not run through the urban area of Graz or ends there. In October 2015 a new expansion plan was presented, which envisages one from Unzmarkt to Bruck an der Mur and one from Bruck an der Mur to Mürzzuschlag from the 2016/17 timetable change. A connection to Trofaiach via one is also being considered.
Further expansion plans
This was to be extended through the center of Weiz to the school center in the north of the city by September 2017 and two new stops, Weiz Zentrum and Weiz Nord, were to be built. Due to a lack of operating permits, commissioning will be delayed indefinitely. On September 10, 2018, train services to the Weiz Zentrum and Weiz Nord stops began.
With the completion of the train station in Frohnleiten , which will be expanded from 2 to 3 platform tracks, there are plans in the future to increase traffic on the one between Graz and Frohnleiten, as the southern section of this S-Bahn line is more heavily used than the northern section.
There are also plans to extend the lines and to Eibiswald and to electrify the lines of , and . The Köflacherbahn and Wieserbahn are to be electrified by December 2025, and electrification is to be completed at the same time as the Koralmbahn goes into operation .
In the course of the construction of the Koralm Railway, an underground line is to be built in the area of Graz Airport .
Accidents
On May 6, 2015, 10:15 a.m., two S-Bahn trains collided head-on on the S11 near the Waldstein stop after one of the train drivers ignored a signal. The driver of the StB and a passenger were killed, eight other people, including two children, were injured. Furthermore, two class 4062 S-Bahn railcars were badly damaged. As part of the investigation, employees accused the operator of “problems with security”.
On February 12, 2018, there was a flank journey between a S8 train (Friesach - Mürzzuschlag) and the EuroCity 216 (Graz Hauptbahnhof - Saarbrücken) at Niklasdorf station. A 58-year-old woman was killed in the EC and 29 other people, including several children, were injured. According to the first results of the investigation, one of the train drivers overlooked a red signal. 4744 054 and several Deutsche Bahn InterCity cars were damaged in the accident.
