The Bombardier Talent ( proper spelling TALENT ) is a family of railcars from the manufacturer Bombardier Transportation (originally the Talbot wagon factory ). “Talent” is an acronym for Talbot's light commuter railcar . The units were produced either as diesel (with mechanical or electrical power transmission) or as electric multiple units. There are versions with and without tilting technology . The interior design ( seat divider ) is freely selectable. The prototype was presented in 1996; by the beginning of 2003, more than 300 units had been delivered or ordered.

The manufacturer Bombardier developed a successor model called Talent 2 , which has been in production since 2008. However, these units are only offered as electric railcars.

Technical specifications

The TALENT is a standard gauge full -gauge railway vehicle in accordance with the UIC standard. It is optionally available with tram equipment with indicators, exterior mirrors and other items.

The streamlined shape ( design by Alexander Neumeister ) is typical : the heads taper to a point, at the youngest point a Scharfenberg coupling forms the end. The side walls are not vertical, as is the case with most rail vehicles, instead the cross-section is approximately oval, in order to keep the tilting technology in the clearance profile, which has only been installed in Norway so far .

The Talent is available as a two-, three- or four-part articulated vehicle , the successor Talent 2 is offered in up to six parts. The joints are designed as a wagon transition over Jakobs bogies . Only the bogies at the ends of the wagons are powered. Apart from the two (independent) drive units and the Jakobs bogies, the railcars are low-floor . The transitions above the Jakobs bogies are step-free with ramps. The floor height can be selected between 590 millimeters, 800 millimeters or 960 millimeters above the upper edge of the rail in the low-floor section and thus at the entrance. In the high-floor section it is then 1130 millimeters, for example. The usual equipment features for modern local railcars such as air conditioning , passenger information system , barrier-free vacuum toilet or multi-purpose compartment are available.

commitment

Vehicles of the Talent family are used in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Norway (tilting technology version), the Netherlands and Canada.

Deutsche Bahn

Series 644 and 944

The Deutsche Bahn (DB) designates three-part Talent with diesel-electric drive , which were procured for S-Bahn-like traffic on non-electrified routes, as the 644 (end car) and 944 (intermediate car) series . The DB received 63 multiple units (644 001/501 to 063/563). In the 644, each part of the vehicle was expanded by the width of an additional door. With folding seats in the doorways, this variant offers a high seating capacity. The floor height is 800 millimeters. The vehicles were mainly used in the Cologne area from 1999 to June 2014 on the Oberbergische Bahn (course book route (KBS) 459), the Eifel route (KBS 474) and the Voreifelbahn (KBS 475), sometimes in triple traction. The units 644 061-063 were used from EXPO 2000 to December 2003 on the Bielefeld - Dissen-Bad Rothenfelde (Haller Willem) route. The vehicles then entered the above-mentioned. Main area of operation, but returned several times to Westphalia, initially for the RB Bielefeld - Oelde, later several times as a short-term 425 replacement on the RB 61 Bielefeld - Bad Bentheim, from December 2004 also as Porta-Express RE 78 Bielefeld - Minden, which then was extended to Nienburg (Weser) in December 2007. The workshop maintenance of these railcars was always carried out by the Osnabrück plant and, most recently, Münster; since December 2008, all existing 644s were back at the Cologne-Deutzerfeld plant. The vehicles 644 061-063 were equipped for use on the Haller Willem with ticket machines and validators as well as the Haller Willem logos stuck on the outside, with the exception of the 644 062 also with the facilities for radio operation that are still available on the 644 061 today. When deadlines expire, the vehicles are currently being transferred to Hamm (Westf) for standstill management (as of February 26, 2015, at least five units were parked in Hamm (Westf)). In addition, several are parked as spare parts donors in Cologne-Deutzerfeld due to fire or accident damage. However, some vehicles are still needed for scheduled use on the RB 38 (Cologne Messe / Deutz - Bedburg).

At the beginning of 2016, DB carried out test drives with some vehicles on the Hochrheinbahn and Brenzbahn . These test runs were positive, so that since mid-March 2016 seven trains have been in regular operation on the Brenzbahn that were previously in use in North Rhine-Westphalia (including on the Eifel route). The trains were previously overhauled by the DB. How many vehicles of the 644 series will be used on the Hochrheinbahn in the future has not yet been determined (as of January 22, 2016). In addition, since 2016 vehicles of the 644 series have been used as replacement vehicles for vehicles of the 632 and 633 series that have not yet been delivered in the Sauerland network (including RE 17 and RE 57). The Dortmund and Münster plants also use individual vehicles on the routes Münster - Enschede (RB 64) and Dortmund - Enschede (RB 51). The railcars are now also used on the Danube Valley Railway between Ulm and Donaueschingen after the 611 class is no longer used there. Three more 644 were assigned to the Kempten plant and are used between Ulm and Memmingen anyway Weissenhorn. The southern railway Ulm - Biberach - Friedrichshafen - Lindau is also served in sections with class 644 railcars.

Series 643 and 943

The DB designates three-part talent with diesel-mechanical drive as the 643 (end car) and 943 (intermediate car) series . The floor height in the entry and middle areas is 590 millimeters, and in the vehicles of the NordWestBahn it is 80 centimeters. The class 643 multiple units are used by the depots in Kaiserslautern, Trier, Duisburg and Münster (Westphalia) and since December 2010 at the Karlsruhe depot. Until the redesign of the 644 series, these vehicles were more comfortable than the 644 series. In contrast to the original variant of the 644, there are thicker cushions and armrests in the second car class. In addition, the interior is structured differently, including a smaller multi-purpose compartment in the 643. The drive is diesel-mechanical, that of the 644 diesel-electric. The engine output is also lower than that of the 644.

34 vehicles of the 643 series have been in service on three routes in western Münsterland since December 2011 (including on the Dortmund – Enschede railway line as RB 51) and have been visually and technically overhauled for this purpose.

Class 643 trains have also been in service on the Lahn-Eifel-Bahn routes since December 2014 . This includes the Andernach – Kaisersesch railway , the Andernach – Koblenz section of the Left Rhine Line and the Lahn Valley Railway .

Series 643.2
643.226 BOStrab
643 226 with full BOStrab equipment, factory test at Aachen North station

The series 643.2 refers to two-part diesel-mechanical units that the DB procured for operation on the Euregiobahn . These vehicles have a complete train control system for operation in the Netherlands ( ATB ) and are electrically equipped for operation in accordance with BOStrab in Aachen . For the corresponding approval, the vehicle 9580 0643 226 was completely equipped with all components for the BOStrab operation (fold-out side mirrors, side indicators and balise-controlled switching device for the operating modes EBO and BOStrab). Since the project of tram operation with the vehicles of the 643.2 series was never realized, the BOStrab equipment of the 643 226 was then removed again, except for the side direction indicators . Between the lights on top and tail lamp integrated in the bulb holder lights for brake lights and direction indicators are today but still recognizable at all DB vehicles in this series.

The floor height is 800 millimeters in the entry areas and between the bogies, otherwise 1190 millimeters. DB Regio only has 24 vehicles of this sub-series after units 643 224 and 225 were destroyed by a fire. The NordWestBahn operates two such vehicles (without equipment according to BOStrab).

Mixed multiple traction 644/643 / 643.2

mixed multiple traction
Test drive in mixed multiple traction with a vehicle from the 643 series, followed by 644 and 643.3

Although most Talent locomotives can be coupled mechanically and electrically and have the same on-board voltage of 24 V, due to different control concepts it is not possible to control vehicles of different series multiple times. After the various railway administrations had not been able to agree on a uniform standard, the DB commissioned in 2004 on its own initiative and limited to its own three series the conversion of the control (software, control lines on the electrical coupling sockets) for a mixed multiple traction operation . The tests and approvals took place in 2005, and since then the 644, 643 and 643.2 series have been technically capable of running in any combination in mixed multiple traction with up to three multiple units.

Bavarian Oberland Railway

The Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB) has been using three three-part diesel-powered multiple units as amplifiers during rush hour since 2004. They complement the features of the Integral type . Six more multiple units were ordered for the 2013 timetable change.

Austrian Federal Railways

The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are using three variants of the “Talent” multiple unit. These were supplied by a consortium of Bombardier Transportation Austria and ELIN . The trains were built in the Talbot wagon factory that was taken over by Bombardier . As a consortium partner, Elin supplied the electrical part to Bombardier.

Row 4023

ÖBB 4023 modernized in Cityjet design

The ÖBB designates the three-part railcars with electric drive as series 4023. Eleven of them were delivered, of which seven are currently in use for the Salzburg S-Bahn . The 4023 have been approved by the EBA for use in Germany since December 15, 2005. ÖBB and DB have been using it since June 2006 with the joint Salzburg S-Bahn line 3 (Saalfelden - Schwarzach - Freilassing - Bad Reichenhall and Golling - Salzburg - Bad Reichenhall). A train was leased from the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen until the arrival of new Stadler GTW railcars at the end of 2010 , which they use on the (Graz -) Peggau - Übelbach line . The reason is that the platforms on the Peggau - Übelbach line are too short for the 4024 series. Three of them have been in use in the Carinthia-East Tyrol area since mid-December 2009. In addition, the regional traffic on the Semmering Railway is operated alternately by the 4020 and 4023 series .

The commissioning of the vehicles was delayed due to a lack of approval by the supervisory authority.

Row 4024

Front view of the ÖBB series 4024 at Waidhofen an der Ybbs station (2017)

The 4024 series is the four-part version of the electric talent for ÖBB. With 140 sets, these vehicles represent the backbone of ÖBB's local traffic throughout Austria. They are in all areas with a large volume of local traffic ( S-Bahn Vienna , S-Bahn Tirol , S-Bahn Styria , S-Bahn Vorarlberg , S-Bahn Carinthia up to and including Lienz, Salzburg - Saalfelden, Pyhrnbahn , Linz). These multiple units received the generic sign BDET and the UIC identification of the locomotives 93 81 4024 xxx, where xxx stands for the serial number. This encodes the following information: Austrian multiple unit with more than 190 km / h (actually only 140 km / h), electrically driven high-speed rail car for inner-city and suburban traffic with second- class seats .

Row 4124

The 4124 series (initially labeled Rh 4824) are two-frequency multiple units corresponding to the 4024 series for contact wire voltages of 15 and 25 kV. 37 pieces were delivered. The 25 kV facility is used when deploying from Vienna to Hungary via the Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurter railway lines .

criticism

After protests, the Austrian version was retrofitted with a vehicle-bound ramp for wheelchair users.

The driving comfort was also criticized: there were too few seats, the seats too hard, the seat spacing too small, the loudspeaker announcements too loud and sun blinds missing. From the end of 2013, a high-floor area was equipped with more comfortable seats, mostly with row seating, footrests and folding tables in some sets. This area is known as the comfort zone . In addition, the repainting in the ÖBB Cityjet design and the upgrading of the interior have been in progress since the end of 2017 and should be completed by 2022.

Norway

Talent of the Norwegian State Railways at the time

Since 2001, Vy (until April 2019 Norges Statsbaner , NSB) has been using 15 two-part diesel-powered Talent as NSB Type 93 on the non-electrified routes in central and northern Norway (including the Nordlandsbanen ). Modern trains have reduced travel time, but are controversial because of their low level of comfort for long distances. For wheelchair users, a lift was installed in the Norwegian version.

Hungarian State Railways

Talent of the Hungarian state railway MÁV in Budapest

The Hungarian State Railways MÁV owns ten four-part two-frequency units, which they designate as the 5342 series. They were derived directly from the series 4124 of the ÖBB, the first vehicles were won directly by converting the delivery series 4124 for the ÖBB. In Hungary, 25 kilovolts are used, while cross-border operations to Austria use 15 kilovolts. On July 10, 2009, MÁV took the ten Talent out of circulation on the advice of Bombardier. The reason for this is excessive wear on the brake discs, as the Hungarian train control system EVM only acts on the compressed air brake, but not the electrodynamic brake.

Slovakia - Regiojet

Talent diesel multiple units have been in use on route 131 Bratislava – Komárno , which is privately operated by RegioJet , since March 4, 2012 . The first railcars arrived in Slovakia on January 20th. There they were repainted in the colors of RegioJet. A total of nine three-part railcars are rented from Alpha Trains for this purpose . They were used until December 2011 for the Prignitzer Railway on the Dortmund – Enschede line.

Switzerland - BLS AG

From the mid-1990s, the procured BLS , now BLS AG under the project name Ni ederflur- Na hverkehrszug "NINA" a total of 36 units of type bls rabe 525 . The low-floor concept and bogie technology derive largely from the Talent multiple unit. As a further development, BLS AG acquired a further 25 units from 2008 under the name BLS RABe 535 . They operate under the name Lötschberger .

Accidents

  • On April 6, 2006 the railcars 644 020 and 644 026 of the DB Regio NRW caught fire on the route between Rösrath-Stümpen and Cologne.
  • On May 3, 2009, railcar 644 061 of the DB Regio NRW caught fire on the route between Overath and Gummersbach near Dieringhausen.
  • On June 25, 2012, railcar 643 225 of the DB Regio NRW ( Euregiobahn ) caught fire on the route between Aachen and Stolberg near Eilendorf . The fire broke out in a switch cabinet behind the driver's cab of the second railcar. The cause was insulation faults in both traction vehicles. The coupling of the vehicles in Stolberg resulted in a short circuit and thus a thermal overload. The resulting fire led to an emergency stop. The train was then evacuated in the open. Two people suffered light smoke inhalation . The railcar burned out completely. The overhead line tore due to the intense heat .
  • On January 21, 2013 met in Vienna Zehetnergasse around 8:45 at the level of two fully staffed ÖBB the suburban line S 45 -4,024 together. According to the ÖBB, the two trains were occupied by around 280 passengers, 41 of whom were injured. A 4024 was formed from the two damaged units and a 4023 train was lengthened to a 4024 with an excess intermediate car.
  • On the evening of January 6, 2016, VT 643 20 (643 911) of the Niederbarnimer Railway burned out near the Berlin S-Bahn station Wuhletal . All 180 passengers could be evacuated unharmed.
  • On the morning of May 25, 2016, multiple unit 4024 096 derailed on the entry point at Vöcklabrück station. The position of the train assumed by the dispatcher after consultation with the railcar driver differed from the actual position, so that the dispatcher, assuming there was still enough time to set the turnout, changed the turnout when the train was already passing it. Part of the train therefore ended up on the opposite track. The train set running to Kammer-Schörfling as regional train 3264 was traveling without passengers at the time of the derailment, no one was injured. The train was tracked by crane. Only on the evening of May 26th could double-track operations on the Westbahn be resumed.
