A folding seat is a seat for people that is folded away when not in use in order to create more space for other requirements, e.g. B. passage, standing room or other (in public transport e.g. as a parking space for wheelchairs , strollers , bicycles , luggage). Cleaning the floor is also made easier by folding up the seats.

In cars , folding seats usually offer additional seating and are often referred to as emergency seats . Seats in cars that can be folded away and / or sunk forwards if necessary, usually in order to achieve more storage space in the rear area ( trunk ), are also referred to as folding seats.

In aircraft, folding seats are sometimes referred to as jump seats .

Folding seats can be used in various designs and combinations, e.g. B .:

  • Folding bench.

The seat can be made of wood or plastic or it can be upholstered (e.g. with synthetic leather , real leather or textiles ) or made of metal (e.g. also as wire mesh). Folding seats are often designed in such a way that they fold up automatically when a seated person stands up. This can be caused by a weight on the rear edge (with pivot points attached to the side) or a spring mechanism.
