The Styria train and bus GmbH and the Styrian State Railways (short StB ) until 31 May 2018 only Styrian Railways (short STLB ) are a transport company and an associated railway infrastructure companies of the state of Styria . The two companies operate five of their own railway lines with a total length of 124 km. Of this, 77 km are narrow-gauge lines (760 mm) and 47 km are standard gauge - S-Bahn lines (1435 mm). In addition, the companies operate 14 bus routes, a freight terminal and a travel agency .

Corporate structure

From a legal point of view, three independent, but personally and organizationally linked, companies operate under the common brand identity of the Steiermarkbahn: Firstly, the public-law business enterprise Steiermärkische Landesbahnen , which is primarily responsible for the administration of the railway infrastructure. Second, the Steiermarkbahn und Bus GmbH , which is the operational transport company responsible for the management of passenger and freight trains as well as the bus routes, as well as for steam trains and special bus trips. Thirdly, the Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik , which, as a subsidiary of Styria and Bus, operates block train transports across Europe, among other things . The State of Styria (owner representation: Department 16 - Transport and State Building, Public Transport Department) is the legal entity of the Styrian State Railways and the sole owner of the Steiermarkbahn und Bus GmbH, whose sole ownership is the Steiermarkbahn Transport and Logistics.

history

The Steiermarkbahn was founded in 1890 as the "Steiermärkisches Eisenbahnamt" to manage several Styrian regional railways. Until 1918, the Styrian Railway Authority also operated several local railways in what was then Lower Styria , now Slovenia. 1920 to 1926 and again from 1954 to 2018 the name was "Steiermärkische Landesbahnen". On 29 June 2018, the new brand identity, in which all three sub-areas (infrastructure (Styrian State Railways), enterprise management (Styria train and bus) and goods (was Steiermarkbahn Transport and Logistics )) of the current STB / STLB branded Steiermarkbahn (StB) combines will be presented.

Today the Styrian Railway has the railway license (passenger and freight transport) for the Styrian Eastern Railway from Graz to the Hungarian border near Mogersdorf and for the Graz – Werndorf section including the Graz Süd / Werndorf terminal. In addition to the train and bus operations, the Steiermarkbahn has a travel agency in Murau. The travel agency is connected to the Travi-Austria computer reservation system and is therefore directly networked with all airlines and all major tour operators.

The railway company is also the operator of the 10 km long Mixnitz – Sankt Erhard local railway and the Graz Süd / Werndorf freight terminal. In addition to passenger and goods traffic, excursion traffic with historic steam trains is also operated on some routes. In addition, the Steiermarkbahn is the most important of the three economic enterprises in the state of Styria.

On May 6, 2015, there was a head-on collision on the Peggau – Übelbach local railway in which several passengers were seriously injured and a train driver died. In addition, two out of three electric GTWs were partially badly damaged. The 4062 003 was refurbished and returned to passenger service, while the empty car body of the 4062 001 is parked in Weiz. A reconstruction of the railcar is currently not planned.

Operational management by the StB

  • Local railway Mixnitz – Sankt Erhard (760 mm), electrified (800 V direct current)
  • Terminal Graz Süd / Werndorf (1,435 mm), diesel operation, partially electrified (15 kV alternating current).

Former routes

On several routes and sections of the StB, traffic was suspended, mostly for economic reasons.

Before 1918, the Steiermarkbahn also operated several local railways in what was then Lower Styria , which is now part of Slovenia.

Freight transport

Steiermarkbahn 1142 578 in Graz Don Bosco

The StB carries out regional and supraregional freight transports by rail, such as E.g. the Touareg Express from the Magna plants in Preding near Weiz and Albersdorf to Bratislava to the Volkswagen plant , which runs five times a week.

In cooperation with the subsidiary Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik GmbH, the Steiermarkbahn organizes block train transport in the EU.

Railcars and locomotives

Electric multiple unit ET 1 in Feldbach station
ET 2 on the Raabbrücke Feldbach

There are three locomotives in the service of the railway according to the 2016 series “Herkules” of the ÖBB for long-distance transport of goods.

Passenger traffic between Weiz and Graz is handled by class 5047 and 5062 (GTW) railcars , and used light steel cars were also purchased from Switzerland, one of which was converted into a control car using a 5047 driver's cab . These were replaced by used CityShuttle wagons from ÖBB after the Easter break in 2014 . Three diesel-electric and three electric articulated railcars were procured from Stadler for S-Bahn traffic. These are fully compatible with the GTWs ordered by GKB . The diesel GTW have only been in use since November 2011 due to registration problems.

The local railway to Übelbach has been operated with three electric multiple units type GTW 2/6 since 2011, which only differ from the diesel-electric ones in the drive module. Previously, former Swiss electric multiple units were used, one of which is still used today in weekend traffic.

Electric multiple units (built in 1930, modernized 1979/1990) are also in use on the Feldbach – Bad Gleichenberg regional railway , and an electric locomotive is used for freight transport.

The narrow-gauge railcars VT 31–35 , which were subsequently copied by the ÖBB as the 5090 series , run on the Murtalbahn . The StB also has suitable control cars for this series. On the Murtalbahn - as on the Feistritztalbahn - nostalgia trips with steam locomotives are carried out.

The Styria Railway has the following rolling stock available for freight transport and shunting :

Narrow gauge (760 mm)

  • 8 steam locomotives
  • 8 diesel locomotives
  • 5 diesel railcars
  • 4 electric locomotives (direct current)
  • 4 control cars (passenger coaches)
  • 27 passenger cars (tourist trains)
  • 3 luggage carts
  • 168 freight cars

Standard gauge (1,435 mm)

  • 6 diesel locomotives
  • 5 diesel railcars
  • 1 electric locomotive (direct current)
  • 4 electric multiple units (alternating current)
  • 2 electric multiple units (direct current)
  • 7 passenger coaches and control coaches
  • 42 freight cars

Trivia

The Steiermarkbahn is the last railway company to use the kkStB and BBÖ series scheme for its steam locomotives .

Vehicle design

former STLB logo

Until 1992, the rail vehicles of the then STLB were designed differently depending on the region (individual vehicles still have the old color scheme today). The vehicles on today's S11 ( Übelbacherbahn ) were painted yellow at the top and red at the bottom. Ivory -green painted passenger cars were used on today's S31 ( Weizerbahn ), the rail buses were orange with a blue roof. The railcars of today's R532 ( Gleichenberger Bahn ) were painted ivory at the top and light blue at the bottom, the ET 1 still wears these colors today. On today's R630 ( Murtalbahn ), the diesel locomotives were red, cars were green or, in the 1980s, green with ivory-colored ribbon windows, the railcars purchased from 1980, like the rail buses of the Weizerbahn, were orange with a blue roof, and the mail cars were yellow with a green roof.

From 1992 (procurement of the 5047 series for the Weizerbahn and the VT 35 for the Murtalbahn) to 2018, the motor coaches and passenger coaches at the STLB at that time were painted red at the ends and green and white in the middle with angled colored separating edges. Locomotives were painted red with white and green diagonal stripes, freight cars gray with a red or red-green vertical stripe. The Styrian Railway 's locomotives used in free network access , on the other hand, were painted white with diagonally offset green color fields, the locomotives of the 2048 series were painted green with a red frame.

On June 29, 2018, the new design for all trains of the now StB was presented. The vehicles are completely painted in traffic white ( RAL 9016). Only a stylized Styrian panther as a figurative mark , the new StB word mark and the doors, which are covered with foils to increase the contrast, offer color accents in traffic green (RAL 6024) and the S-Bahn vehicles have a S-Bahn logo in blue. The front sides of the railcars are partially green and the ribbon windows of the railcars and passenger coaches and the upper area of the locomotives are steel blue (RAL 5011). For cost reasons, the rolling stock is not repainted, but only covered with foil.
