The Steirische Ostbahn is a railway line in Austria and runs from Szentgotthárd via Jennersdorf , Fehring , Feldbach and Gleisdorf to Graz . Before the Austro-Hungarian monarchy disintegrated, it was part of the Hungarian Western Railway .
On the one hand due to the delay in the construction of the Semmering Base Tunnel and the construction of the Koralm Railway, and on the other hand due to the takeover of the Ödenburg / Sopron - Steinamanger / Szombathely - Sankt Gotthard / Szentgotthárd line by the Raaberbahn / GYSEV , this railway line is gaining importance again. The infrastructure projects in the course of the EU expansion on May 1, 2004 also contribute to the development of freight traffic. Since December 2010 there has been an S-Bahn service between Fehring and Graz, which is reinforced by REX trains.
On the Hungarian side, the RÖEE / GySEV carried out extensive expansion measures (superstructure reinforcement and electrification) in the Ödenburg / Sopron - Steinamanger / Szombathely section . After RÖEE / GySEV (previous operator: MÁV ) took over the Steinamanger / Szombathely - Körmend - Sankt Gotthard / Szentgotthárd line in December 2006, this line was also renovated and electrified from October 1, 2009 to December 2, 2010.
The Styrian Eastern Railway is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways . The trains are run as REX and S3, with all trains running between Fehring and Szentgotthard as REX or R. On working days the trains run in the busy morning, afternoon and evening hours at around 30-minute intervals, at all other operating times at 1-hour intervals. The first train leaves Fehring every day at 4:09 a.m. and arrives at Graz Hbf at 5:19 a.m. Every day, the last train leaves Graz Hbf at 00:08 a.m. and arrives at Fehring at 01:21 a.m. On Sundays and public holidays there are no trains from Graz Hbf at 9:08 p.m. and at 11:08 p.m. with arrival in Fehring at 10:27 p.m. and 12:21 a.m. These trains only run Monday to Saturday (working day).
The Styrian State Railways are also authorized to drive the route up to the Austrian border . On working days (except Saturday), these run five direct trains as the S31 from Weiz to Graz Hbf, four direct trains from Graz Hbf to Weiz and a regional train from Graz Hbf to Gleisdorf, which use the Styrian Ostbahn in the section between Gleisdorf-Graz. The StLB use articulated diesel multiple units (5062, Stadler-GTW 2/6) or diesel-hydraulic multiple units (5047) on the Weiz – Gleisdorf – Graz route.
Three railway lines branch off from the Styrian Eastern Railway:
- In Fehring the so-called Thermenbahn to Friedberg and on to Wiener Neustadt
- In Feldbach the Landesbahn Feldbach - Bad Gleichenberg
- In Gleisdorf the Landesbahn Gleisdorf - Weiz
history
In the mid-1850s, a consortium was founded in Graz to set up and build the then so-called Locomotiv Railway , today's Styrian Eastern Railway, between Raab / Győr and Graz .
Three routes were considered for the Austrian part:
- 1st Hungarian border - Fürstenfeld - Ilz - Gleisdorf - Graz
- 2nd Hungarian border - Fehring - Feldbach - Studenzen - Gleisdorf - Nestelbach valley head - Autal - Graz
- 3rd Hungarian border - Fehring - Feldbach - Gleisdorf - Laßnitzthal - Schemerlberg - Graz
After the decision was initially made in favor of option 2, farmers and landowners resisted, especially in the Nestelbach area. With the argument that "the railway would set fire to their fields" they achieved a reallocation to variant 3.
The line belonged to the Hungarian Western Railway from Győr to Graz. On September 1, 1872, the route between Sankt Gotthard / Szentgotthárd and the state border next to Jennersdorf / Gyanafalva was opened. On May 1, 1873, the entire line from Jennersdorf to Graz was opened.
In August 1883 , the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Commerce granted Johann Berghofer, the owner of a mill and real estate in Fehring, along with his comrades, the requested permission to carry out preliminary technical work for a narrow-gauge Vicinal railway from Fehring via Gleichenberg to Radkersburg . This project, which was applied for at the Ministry of Commerce about a year before the concession to build and operate the locomotive railway from Fehring to Fürstenfeld was granted and had no connection with it, was subsequently not implemented.
Hungarian part
On October 1, 1871 the Raab / Győr – Szombathely line was opened. On September 1, 1872, the Steinamanger / Szombathely line - state border next to Jennersdorf / Gyanafalva was opened (the state border at that time was between the railway stations Sankt Gotthard / Szentgotthárd and Jennersdorf / Gyanafalva, where today the border between Burgenland and Styria lies). Expansion plans
Alternative stations
An S-Bahn system for the greater Graz area has been under construction and expansion since 2007 and is in operation as planned. The Styrian Eastern Railway could not be included for the time being due to insufficient infrastructure. With the construction of three alternative stations in Autal, Laßnitzthal and Takern by the end of 2010, the prerequisites for S-Bahn operations were created. In Autal, the turnout was created in the area of the abandoned old bus stop. The stop was rebuilt a few kilometers in Hart bei Graz. The new Takern-St. Margarethen with a siding was set up between the former Takern station and the former Kroisbach-Zöbing stop, which replaces these two stations. In Laßnitzthal, the alternative station and station were built in the area of the old bus stop. After completing the extensive track construction work and commissioning the new central platform, the old station building was demolished in early 2011.
High performance track
The route between Graz and Gleisdorf is to be upgraded to a high-performance railway. Information offices were set up in Graz and Gleisdorf for the route planning of this high-performance line between Raaba and Gleisdorf. Through a continuous two-track route, complete electrification and relocation of the route to the south (between Raaba and Lassnitzthal) with a 6 km long base tunnel in the Lassnitzhöhe area, travel speeds of up to 160 km / h and thus a reduction in travel time between Graz and Gleisdorf from 31 to 22 minutes. After the decision on the definitive course of the future route, the environmental impact assessment (EIA) was initiated. Between 2010 and 2015, the environmental impact assessment and the railway approval procedure (building permit) should be completed. By backing up the project in the general transport plan and the resulting postponement of the start of construction, the commissioning of the NBS at the same time as the Koralmbahn in 2023 is no longer possible. Furthermore, consideration was given to keeping the existing route over the Laßnitzhöhe and using it as part of a city railway from Graz via Gleisdorf to Weiz.
Connection with the Koralmbahn
Between Raaba and Feldkirchen bei Graz, a single-track connection to the Koralm Railway is planned along the southern motorway. This is to be used as a freight train bypass from Graz and as a connection between the Styrian Eastern Railway and the Graz Süd terminal on the Baltic-Adriatic axis (TEN corridor).
General transport plan
In the general traffic plan, the Austrian Federal Government listed the Styrian Eastern Railway on February 25, 2002 in package 2 under the items "Electrification of the Styrian Eastern Railway", "Selective double-track expansion Gleisdorf - Szentgotthard" and "Construction of three new operational switches on the Styrian Eastern Railway".
