Messendorf , a district of Graz in Styria , is located in the 8th district of Graz-St. Peter and forms the cadastral community " Graz Stadt-Messendorf" . The adjacent parts in the municipality of Hart bei Graz , Graz-Umgebung district , form the cadastral municipality of " Messendorf" .

geography

The district is located on the south-eastern edge of Graz, where the Graz Basin merges into the eastern Styrian hill country and on the northern edge of the valley of the Raababach . The area belongs to the suburban area surrounding the city of Graz.

The former town of Messendorf is in the Graz cadastral community. It includes these landmarks and locations: the junction of Autalerstraße  (L 311) from Grazer Ring Straße  (B 67a); the Tiefental with the Messendorf station of the Styrian Eastern Railway ; the Messendorf industrial park ; furthermore the Messendorfberg group ; and to the east, reaching into the Raabatal, in the Harter cadastral community, the Rotte Reintal and the village of Pachern .

History and culture

Messendorf, mentioned in a document as Mezzendorf as early as 1233 , is a former tax municipality , then a local municipality with a village chief , and a district of the parish of St. Peter . The village was on Schemerlstrasse , the route from Graz via Messendorf, Schemerl , St. Marein am Pickelbach , Studenzen , Feldbach , Fehring to St. Gotthard in Hungary (today Szentgotthárd). The Hungarian Western Railway (today's Steir. Ostbahn) was built along this route and put into operation in 1873.

In 1938 it was incorporated into Graz, while the eastern part came to Hart bei St. Peter (today: "bei Graz").

In the former site, the lie Messendorf Castle , the Moosbrunn Castle and the Church of Sorrows (built in 1909, Stationskaplanei Graz-Messendorf since 1941), in Reintal the Reinthal Castle , and above Messendorf Berg, against Peter Bergen out the Johanneskapelle John Nepomuk (measuring Chapel St. ) .

Messendorf Castle, formerly the State Special Hospital for Psychiatry and Neurology, currently houses the Graz Waldorf School . The Austrian Academy of Sciences Graz , the central point for the Graz-Lustbühel satellite station, is also nearby . The Messendorf industrial park with the Shopping Ost center and the Messendorf training center on Sternäckerweg are also located here .
