history

The area around Laßnitzhöhe was once part of the Western Roman Empire , after its collapse (AD 476), most of the provincial Roman population withdrew.

While large parts of Eastern Styria were already enriched with villages and settlements in the first half of the 12th century, settlement in the area of Laßnitzhöhe did not take place until the second half of the century.

In the 16th century, large parts of today's municipal area were probably incorporated into the Teutonic Knight Order through the Treaty of Baden or through succession . The order remained the landlord of what was then called Wöbling until 1848.

After the revolution of 1848 , district and communal administrations were introduced in Austria.

Place name

Laßnitz comes from Slavonic (originally Lieznica, Luosniza, for example ) and is translated as "Waldbach". In linguistics, * loNč'nica "Wiesenbach" is also discussed for Laßnitz (from the year 890:  Luonzniza ) , as a further possibility (from the year 1345: Lesniz, Laßnitz near Murau or in 1080 in the Paltental Laznich ) * laz'nica "Gereutbach" or "Rodebach". The derivation from * laz / 6nica , to lazъ, "clearing, cleared, clear place in the forest" also contains a reference to the course of the stream in a cleared area .

Construction of the railroad

In the mid-fifties of the 19th century, a consortium was founded in Graz to set up and build what was then known as the Locomotiv Railway , today's Styrian Eastern Railway , between Graz and Győr (then Raab). Three routes were considered:

Initially, it was decided in favor of variant 2, but farmers and landowners in the Nestelbach area, among other things, argue that “the railway would set their fields on fire” and obtained a rerouting to variant 3.

The line opened on May 1, 1873.

Development into a health resort

Due to the easy accessibility, the Graz doctor Dr. Günther Huber, to build a pension and several villas in Laßnitzhöhe for the summer vacation . At the turn of the century, a cooperative led by Dr. SR Eduard Miglitz took over the building and rebuilt it by 1901 into the most modern sanatorium in Styria at the time . The treatment of "nerve ailments of all kinds" such as paralysis and cramps as well as pain such as migraines and sciatic complaints took place . Laßnitzhöhe has been recognized as a climatic health resort since October 1929 .

After the world wars , it was difficult for the spa to catch up with the heyday before 1914. Many guests from the former areas of the monarchy dropped out and mainly guests from Vienna and Graz remained. Nevertheless, Laßnitzhöhe was named a climatic health resort in 1984. After extensive renovation and renovation measures, the sanatorium was run as a sanatorium from 1991 to 2003 . After a recent renovation, the former sanatorium, now a private clinic Laßnitzhöhe, is one of the most modern clinics in Austria. In addition to internal medicine and dermatology , the focus of care is on neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation .

In 1995, Laßnitzhöhe was voted the most beautiful flower village in Styria and, after being named a market town in 1999, it was awarded the title of the most beautiful flower market in Styria in 2006. In 2005 Laßnitzhöhe was the second most beautiful flower market.

In 2001 the community and sports club celebrated their 50th anniversary and the Kurhaus Laßnitzhöhe celebrated their 100th anniversary. In 2002 the traditional chapel could look back on 50 years since its foundation, which was celebrated with the blessing of the flag for the chapel. The parish of Laßnitzhöhe was also able to celebrate the blessing of two new church bells.

In summer 2007, after a short renovation period, the newly designed market square was ceremoniously handed over to the citizens. In 2008 a local heating network was set up within the community. In April 2009 the Gasthaus Kotzian was demolished and in 2010 a building with apartments with underground parking and a restaurant as well as space for a new municipal office, a bank and several shops was built on the same site.

From 2015 to 2017, the parish office was demolished and rebuilt, and there was space for additional shops in the new building.
