Gratwein is a village and former market town with 3641 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Styria northwest of Graz in the Graz-Umgebung district and the Graz-West judicial district . As part of the Styrian community structural reform , it was merged with the communities of Judendorf-Straßengel , Eisbach and Gschnaidt in 2015 , the new community bears the name Gratwein-Straßengel . The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG.

Geographical location
Gratwein is located on the western (right) bank of the Mur across from Gratkorn about ten kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Graz. Gratwein has grown together with Judendorf . The Schirningbach flows through the town center .

Gratwein is located in the Gratkorner Basin , which opens to the West Styrian Riedelland and forms a widening of the Murtal.

The local communities as autonomous corporations came into being after the abolition of the manorial lords in 1850. The cadastral communities of Judendorf, Straßengel, Rötz, Hundsdorf and Kugelberg were also part of the market community of Gratwein.
From 1860 Judendorf-Straßengel developed into one of the most famous health resorts of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, eventually separated from Gratwein and became an independent local community in 1909.

traffic
Due to its proximity to Graz, Gratwein is very well connected in terms of transport. The area is not directly on one of the main roads, but on the main road from Gratkorn to Eisbach . Via this connection, Grazer Straße B 67 can be reached in around two kilometers. The closest junctions to the Pyhrn Autobahn A 9 are Deutschfeistritz (165) around eight kilometers away in the north and Gratkorn (173) around six kilometers away in the south.
The Gratwein-Gratkorn train station is located in the former municipality and provides access to the Austrian Southern Railway with hourly S-Bahn connections (S1) to Graz and Bruck an der Mur .
The Graz Airport is about 28 km away.

- Anton Wolfradt (1582–1639), President of the Court Chamber, Cistercian, Abbot of Kremsmünster and Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Vienna, was pastor of Gratwein from 1609 to 1612
