The Schirningbach is a right bank tributary of the Mur in the Austrian state of Styria . It forms a valley in the market town of Gratwein-Straßengel and flows into the Mur after twelve kilometers near Gratwein .

course

Small power station on the creek

The Schirningbach rises between the districts of Farrmegg and Oberweizberg in the western Styrian municipality of Stiwoll . It initially runs through a wooded ditch south-east and takes on the Pleschbach on the left at the municipal boundary to Gratwein-Straßengel . It then flows along the L336 (Liebochtalstraße) and emerges into a wide valley below the Meierhof district at 3.5 km . In the agricultural district of Schirning, the stream takes in several feeders, mainly from the right, and at the level of Mittlere Schirning has an approximately 800-meter-long side arm.

After a more or less natural run, the Schirningbach feeds the Hubertusteich before the valley narrows again. After the confluence of the Kehrerbauergraben , the brook breaks through the limestone clod of the Graz Paleozoic Era and forms a narrow point between the Kalvarienberg in the north and the Kugelberg in the south at Bad Weihermühle. After taking in the Mühlbach, it flows through the center of Gratwein and flows into the Mur in the industrial area .

natural reserve

As a result of EU infringement proceedings against the Republic of Austria, a search began in 2014 for potential areas to implement Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) . On behalf of the Styrian Provincial Government, zoologists investigated the occurrence of the dragonfly species Großer Quelljungfer in the alpine biogeographical area of Styria. 40 stretches of water, including the Schirningbach and several of its tributaries, were observed. The spring virgin population on the Eisbach feeder on the right bank was classified as “excellent” and served as the basis for designating a European protected area . The 29.3 hectare protected area was decided in November 2018 and comprises a six-kilometer stretch of the Schirningbach including accompanying vegetation including all feeders in this section and part of the Enzenbach in the Stübing open-air museum .

In May 2011 there was massive fish death in the Hubertus pond fed by the Schirningbach . According to an expert opinion, overstocking led to the formation of gill worms and trichodina, which are harmless to humans . The damage has been estimated at up to 2000 kg of mirror carp and common carp .
