Old buildings from rural areas that have been dismantled throughout Austria have been moved to the 60  hectare mountainous area of the open-air museum . Naturally, these are mainly farms , starting with the 17th century. But also old mills or an old school as well as forest workers huts up to the beginning of the 20th century were rebuilt here. The houses are supplemented by old furnishings and tools.

Like the actual location of Austria, the ascending valley also extends from east to west, so that a visit is possible analogously to reed- roofed buildings from Burgenland to the alpine huts in the Bregenz Forest . In addition to the around one hundred original buildings, there are two exhibition buildings on the site that house changing exhibitions.

History of the museum

The first plans for an open-air museum go back to 1908 (Rudolf Meringer), but could only be realized after examining various possible locations in Stübing from 1962 (foundation) to 1970 (opening) under the direction of Viktor Herbert Pöttler .

Since 2003, the Grazer Umland-Weg (GUW) , supervised by the Friends of Nature , has been leading across the site, according to the Graz local group, the only long-distance hiking trail that crosses a museum.

The Stübing open-air museum has been part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum since January 1, 2019 .
