The International Council of Museums ( ICOM , German International Museum Council ) is an international, non-governmental organization for museums that was founded in 1946 in cooperation with UNESCO .

General

The ICOM consists of 118 national committees and 30 international specialist committees. The General Secretariat is located in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris . The network has around 37,000 members in 151 countries around the world. The languages ​​of communication are French, English and Spanish.

The national committee ICOM Austria was founded in 1948 and registered as an association in 2004. In 2007 Vienna hosted the ICOM General Conference 2007 .

The German National Committee of the International Museum Council ( ICOM Germany ) was founded in 1953 and is based in Berlin .

ICOM is a founding member of the culture protection organization Blue Shield International . In this context, the national and international protection of museums as a cultural asset or part of the growing cultural heritage in the event of wars, armed conflicts or disasters is to be ensured.
