The Grazer Umland-Weg ( GUW marking ) is a circular hiking trail in the Austrian state of Styria . The Styrian capital Graz can be hiked around the Styrian capital Graz in several stages on the almost 200 km long path, which is supervised by Naturefriends .

Emergence

The Grazer Umland-Weg was opened in the European Capital of Culture 2003 on the initiative of Naturfreunde hiking guide and route consultant Werner Höttl. Höttl had previously contributed to the realization of the “Grazer Grenzgang”, a first circular hiking trail in Graz, which circles the city near the municipal boundary for around 120 km. Existing hiking trails were marked and signposted for the route, so no new trail infrastructure had to be created.

According to local group chairman Hans Pammer, the aim of the GUW is to focus more on the little-noticed hinterland of the Styrian capital with its natural and cultural features. In addition to cooperations with numerous inns along the route (checkpoints), there is one with the Stübing open-air museum , which means that the GUW is the only long-distance hiking trail that leads through a museum.

course

Main route

The main route of the GUW leads through the Stübing open-air museum .

The Grazer Umland-Weg runs on both sides of the Mur Valley at a distance of 8 to 23 km around the city of Graz . Some popular sights are passed on different sections.

Around half of the GUW runs on roads with little traffic, as here in front of St. Ulrich am Waasen .

Going counter-clockwise from Judendorf you get to the right from Kirchberg to the Straßengelberg. Then the path makes a bend to the west and runs via St. Oswald near Plankenwarth and through the Liebochtal to St. Bartholomä . Passing the Sonneck and Schütting castles as well as the Rotte Österreich you reach Söding and continue on the edge of the Kainach Valley to Lannach and Dietersdorf . Through the Kaiserwald ( Wundschuher Teiche ) you get to the southern Grazer Feld near Werndorf , from where the Mur Cycle Path leads to Wildon , the southernmost and lowest point of the route.

Via Allerheiligen and the Josef Krainer Memorial, the hiking trail continues up and down to St. Ulrich am Waasen and Gnaning , from where you descend to Fernitz . Via the Hühnerberg ( 484  m ), Edelsgrub and Nestelbach , Laßnitzhöhe is the only train station in the eastern part of the route. At Eggersdorf the Rabnitz valley is crossed and you hike via Kumberg and St. Radegund to Graz's local mountain Schöckl , at 1,443  m above sea level. A. highest point of the circular hiking trail. After descending into the Rötschgraben and crossing the Kesselfallklamm , you reach Semriach , walk past the Lurgrotte and after another ascent arrives at the Hochtrötsch ( 1239  m ). After passing Frohnleitens , the northernmost point of the circuit, you hike through the hills on the right bank of the Mur to Deutschfeistritz and over the Gamskogel ( 859  m ) and through the Stübing open-air museum to Rein Abbey and back to Judendorf.

variants

In the course of the GUW there are official, marked variants for five sections of the route.

  • In Gnaning it is possible to forego a detour to Fernitz and continue hiking on the road, which not only saves a counter-climb, but also more than 4 km of distance.
  • The Kesselfallklamm can be bypassed on the east side ( orographic left ).
  • At Eichberg (municipality of Deutschfeistritz ) there is a detour via the archaeologically and speleologically interesting Kugelstein , which is an additional 4 km and 100 m ascent.
  • The partially exposed ridge on the Gamskogel near Stübing can be avoided by descending the forest road through the Königgraben. This variant means a distance of around 600 m and 120 m less.
  • In Stübing there are two alternatives for hikers who do not want to cross the open-air museum . The almost equally wide variant B leads over the Hörgassattel and means about 50 m more. Variant C is connected with a steep ascent over the Pfaffenkogel ( 734  m ), which has an additional effect of around 900 m and 250 m.

Condition of the path, walking time and height difference

The nature of the path ranges from asphalt roads, as they dominate in parts of the southern section, to forest roads to narrow forest paths and alpine paths, for example on the Schöckl or Hochtrötsch. The variants via Gamskogel and Pfaffenkogel near Stübing require surefootedness . A fee-based climbing system with wooden ladders leads through the Kesselfallklamm , but can be bypassed in the same way as the gravel path through the Stübing open-air museum .

According to the GUW guide of the Friends of Nature, the total walking time is 56½ hours, which means that even for those in good physical condition, the five day walks. Depending on the variant chosen, up to 6,300 meters of altitude are covered. Most of them are in the northern section in the Grazer Bergland , the ascent from Kumberg to the Schöckl is the longest with 950 m.

Remarks

  1. The starting point and destination can be selected individually; a point that can be reached by public transport is recommended (see starting points ).
  2. The Stübing Open-Air Museum can only be hiked through as the Hintertor only opens to the outside. If you want to stay on the main route, the GUW must therefore be completed in an anti-clockwise direction.
