Berndorf is a village in western Styria and a cadastral municipality of the municipality of Hitzendorf in the Graz-Umgebung district , Styria . The first written mention of Berndorf comes from the year 1136.

Geography and localization

The cadastral community is located about ten kilometers west of Graz, in the Södingtal .

The cadastral community consists of the localities Altenberg , Altreiteregg and Berndorf. In Berndorf there is also the Rotte Österreich, which has only four farms .

Berndorf has its own volunteer fire brigade.

Local chapel

Directly in the local area of ​​Berndorf there is a chapel from 1903. It was built according to plans by the sculptor Hans Brandstetter from Hitzendorf . The Pietà on the altar of the chapel was designed by Brandstetter.

Plague cross

A plague cross from around 1600, which is dedicated to St. Mary , is located near the municipality boundary to Mooskirchen . For the erection of the cross, the Berndorfern took the vow, if the plague should end, to make a pilgrimage once a year, on Good Friday, to the Sebastianikirche in Söding . In 1981 the cross was renovated by the Catholic youth in Berndorf. According to stories from Berndorfer, there is a former plague pit under the cross.
