history

Altenberg Castle around 1800, lith. By JF Kaiser

Altenberg Castle was built by Franz Anton von Haydegg at the end of the 17th century. Previously, the Altenberg estate, which has been known as a farm since the 16th century, was located here . In 1740 the Haydegg family had to sell the castle and all of its properties. Anton Schellenbauer acquired the estate in 1790 and managed it together with Schütting Castle . Schellenbauer was knighted in 1794. However, the title was revoked when he was arrested for fraud in 1817. After Schellenbauer's arrest, the property became the property of the Haffner family from Graz. In 1903 it was acquired by Countess Nyary, whose family lived in the castle for around three decades. In 1911, the Count Nyary extended the castle to double its original size as part of an expansion on the east side. During the Second World War the property was used as accommodation for forced laborers. From the 1960s to 1972 the property was run as a restaurant and was a popular meeting place among the Grazers. In 1976 it was renovated.

Legend of the castle spirit

There is a legend that the ghost of the former castle owner, Anton Schellenbauer, wanders around the castle park on stormy nights. This legend is based on the fact that the Schellenbauer, who is considered to be cruel and greedy, allegedly hid from his subjects for years before they found him and had him cut into four by oxen . In truth, however, Anton Schellenbauer was arrested for fraud and died in a penal institution in 1829.
