Fernitz was an independent municipality with 3287 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2013) south of Graz in the Graz-Umgebung district in Styria ( Austria ) until the end of 2014 . As part of the Styrian community structural reform , it was merged on January 1 of the community of Mellach to form the new community of Fernitz-Mellach . The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG.
It was best known for the late Gothic pilgrimage church of Maria Trost .

Fernitz is located 10 km south of Graz an der Mur .

history
In the 6th century, Slavs came to the area from the east . The name Fernitz clearly shows Slavic origins. In 1160 the Lords of Pranckh built a chapel . In 1209 Fernitz was first mentioned in a document under the name Vorenze (= settlement on Föhrenbach ).
In 1210, Eberhard II , Archbishop of Salzburg , confirmed the decision of the dispute over the church's membership in Straßengel. The Vorinze Hube is mentioned again in this document . In 1482, Emperor Friedrich III pledged it . the Ungeld to Vatersdorf and around u. a. zu Fernitz for a hundred pounds a year to a Jörg Pettenböck. The years 1469–1490 were terrible years: the Magyars invaded the country with great brutality.
In 1480 after the Turkish invasion, the church of Emperor Friedrich III. built in its current form as a votive church. Since September 1st 1997 Mag. Toni Rindler has been pastor of Fernitz and dean of the dean's office in Graz - Land . The two branches , Hl. Dreifaltigkeit zu Hausmannstätten and St. Jakob in Enzelsdorf, are connected to the Fernitz parish . Since January 1st, 1964, Hausmannstätten has been an independent parish again and has its own pastor in GR Josef Ament.
In 1680 the plague raged in Fernitz and carried away many residents. At that time there was already a school building in Fernitz , which must have been one of the oldest houses in the town. In 1826 the school building and with it 30 houses and 34 farm buildings were destroyed in a fire .
In 2009 a Roman grave with a presumably female skeleton as well as beads, a glass vessel and a ceramic drinking cup was found in Fernitz. Nothing is known of an associated Roman settlement. On January 1, 2015, Fernitz was merged with the Mellach community to form the new Fernitz-Mellach community.

Fernitz had exceeded the 3,000 inhabitant limit in 2006, according to the last official census in 2005, 2,942 people lived in Fernitz.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Fernitz was conveniently located south of Graz, many main roads were close to the community without going directly through the community.
Street
The Pyhrn Autobahn (A9) could be reached in around 5 km via the Kalsdorf junction (194). The south autobahn (A2) passed close to the municipality, but could not be reached directly. The closest connection point was Graz Airport / Feldkirchen (183) about 7 km away.
Fernitz was also well connected to the network of the former federal highways. The Grazer Straße (B 67) could be reached in about 2 km in the neighboring town of Kalsdorf and the Kirchbacher Straße (B 73) in about 2 km in the neighboring town of Hausmannstätten .

Fernitz did not have its own train station. The nearest train station was in the neighboring village of Kalsdorf, approx. 3 km away and provided access to the Austrian Southern Railway .
Airport
The Graz Airport was about 5 km away.

Maria Trost zu Fernitz
The most famous sight of the place was the late Gothic pilgrimage church Maria Trost, see also the own article Maria Trost (Fernitz) .
Archduke Johann Park
In 1966, a park was created in the center of the village through the sewage system, backfill and drainage of the approximately 12,000 m² swamped village meadow, into which sewage had previously been channeled. The newly built park with a fountain made up of four fountains in a square basin was opened the following year.
In 1982, the Archduke Johann Park , the village park was given its current name Archduke Johann Park in memory of the Styrian prince .
After three years of project planning and another three months of implementation, the park was redesigned as part of the town center renewal in 1999. In addition to replanting and preserving old trees, the promenade and the fountain were renewed. With this project, the municipality was awarded the Styrian Local Renewal Award in 2000.
In the spring of 2006, the park was expanded to include themed gardens. Around 4,000 companion plants were planted for the approx. 200 varieties of Funkia. Thus, the Erzherzog-Johann-Park is unique of its kind in Austria.
In 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014 Fernitz was chosen as the “most beautiful flower village in Styria” for this endeavor.

Until December 31, 2014, the mayor was Karl Ziegler (ÖVP), Vice Mayor Hans Berghold (ÖVP) and Herbert Cartschenko (SPÖ).
coat of arms
Blazon: split over a shield base split by green and gold; in front a blue heraldic lily in gold, behind in green a silver six . The color green stands here as a symbol of the fertility of the Graz field , while the golden color embodies the "golden ears". The six stands for the "Fernitzer plow" invented in the 19th century and was an integral part of it. The blue lily embodies the holy Maria, who is also eponymous for the pilgrimage church Maria Trost (Fernitz).
