Formation of troops

The battle on the Brodfeld (Hungarian Kenyérmezei csata , Romanian Bătălia de la Câmpul Pâinii ) was one of the largest military conflicts in medieval Transylvania .

The battle was fought on October 13, 1479 on the banks of the Mieresch ( Mureş ) between Broos ( Orăştie ) and Mühlbach ( Sebeş ) on the Brodfeld ( Kenyérmező , Câmpul Pâinii ), near Unterbrodsdorf (today Șibot ).

The Hungarian army was led by the generals Pál Kinizsi , István Báthory , Vuk Branković, and Basarab Laiotă cel Bătrân, the Ottoman army was under the command of Ali Kodsha and Basarab Țepeluș cel Tânăr, a prince from Wallachia.

background

It is believed that with their attack in 1479, the Ottomans wanted to end the influence of the Hungarians in Wallachia on the one hand and to take revenge for the Hungarian attack on Serbia in 1476 on the other. In 1479 they devastated large parts of Transylvania. In the battle on the Brodfeld, however, they suffered a definite defeat.

aftermath

The Turkish losses were high. Several thousand men were killed. However, exact figures can no longer be reconstructed today. However, due to the many deaths, Mieresch is said to have turned red from sheer blood.

As a result Kinizsi was able to inflict further defeats on Ali Kodscha in Serbia. It was an important victory for the Hungarians, because the defeat of the Ottomans meant that they no longer attacked southern Hungary and Transylvania for a long time.
