Șibot (outdated Jibot ; German  Unterbrodsdorf , Hungarian Alkenyér or Zsibót ) is a Romanian municipality in the Alba district in Transylvania .

Geographical location

The community Șibot is located in the under forest on the left side of the Mureş in the southwest of the Alba district. On Drum național 7 and the Arad – Alba Iulia railway line, Ortibot is about 14 kilometers northeast of Orăştie ( Broos , Hunedoara district ); the district capital Alba Iulia is located about 25 kilometers northeast of Șibot. The incorporated villages of Sărăcsău (Flendorf) and Băcăinți (Bocksdorf) are connected to the community by a ferry.

Around the place is the fertile " Brodfeld ", where on October 13, 1479 the Turks suffered a devastating defeat against a Transylvanian army.

history

The history of settlement in the region goes back to the Neolithic . On the territory of the municipality in 1950 in the incorporated village of Sărăcsău - on an area called La Stănini by the locals - according to information from O. Floca, finds were made which point to dwellings from the Neolithic and Roman times .

The place Șibot was first mentioned in 1281 under the Hungarian name Kenér , 1733 under Sibeth , 1839 under Also Kenyer and Zsibot . As a free community located on the Königsboden , the place belonged to the Brooser Stuhl .

The main occupations of the population are agriculture, livestock and work in a gravel mine on the adjacent Mureș River.

The highest population of today's municipality - and at the same time that of the Romanians - was determined in 1850. The highest population of Germans (58) was registered in 1890, Hungarians (140) in 1910 and Roma (78) in 1956. In addition, in 1900, 1956, 1966, 1977 and 1992 one each referred to himself as a Serb and in 1910 one as a Slovak .

  • The Romanian Orthodox Church Adormirea Maicii Domnului , built in the 19th century, is a listed building.
  • The bust of Ban Pál Kinizsi (built in 1929 at the Bahnhofibot train station) and a Chapel of the Cross (built in 1899 in the center of the village, next to the town hall) are listed as historical monuments.
  • The ruins of the Biserica de piatră ("stone church") from the 13th century - a former reformed church - in the incorporated village of Băcăinți , is a listed building.
