Pianu is a Romanian municipality in the Alba County in Transylvania . Parish seat is Pianu de Sus ( Romanian Pien ).
Geographical location
The municipality of Pianu is located on the river Pianu of the same name - a left tributary of the Mureș (Mieresch) - in the Transylvanian Unterwald , north of the Mühlbacher Mountains ( Munții Șureanu ) . On the county road (Drum județean) DJ 104A, the community seat is 14 kilometers southwest of Sebeş (Mühlbach) ; the district capital Alba Iulia (Karlsburg) is located about 29 kilometers northeast.
history
Archaeological finds in the area of the municipality attest to settlements from the Early Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age . Finds in the area of the municipality are associated with the Roman era . Gold has been panned in the Pianu River since the Middle Ages . At the beginning of the 19th century up to 600 gold washers were active.
The place Pianu de Sus was first mentioned in 1454 under the name Blechis pen (1733 under Olah Pian ).

The highest population (4,312) of today's municipality and at the same time that of the Romanians (3863) was determined in 1930, that of the Germans (in the incorporated village of Pianu de Jos , 453) in 1941, the Hungarians in 2002 and that of the Roma in 1850.
Attractions
- The wooden church Cuvioasa Paraschiva , built in 1780 in place of one that was dismantled in 1761, in the parish of Pianu de Sus is a listed building.
- The Romanian Orthodox Churches Naşterea Sf. Ioan Botezătorul (built in the 19th century) and Buna Vestire (built in 1818).
- The Protestant church in the incorporated town of Pianu de Jos ( Deutschpien ), a Romanesque basilica , built in the 13th century, rebuilt in 1798, is a listed building.
