Vuk Grgurević

Vuk Grgurević ( Cyrillic : Вук Гргуревић; † 1485 ), also known as Despot Vuk Branković or Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk , was a Serbian despot (1471–1485).

Life

Vuk Grgurević was the son of Grgur Branković and grandson of the despot Đurađ Branković . In 1465 he joined the Hungarian military and became the commander of the Serbian military troops in Syrmia .

Due to his bravery, Vuk Grgurević acquired a very good reputation and was sung about in many folk songs as Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk , the flaming dragon wolf (Vuk = wolf).

Vuk fought for Hungary against the Czechs , the Poles , the Austrians and against the Ottoman Empire . In 1471 he obtained the title of despot and got numerous possessions in the area of ​​today's Vojvodina, which formerly belonged to the despot Đurađ Branković . His property includes Kupinik (today's Kupinovo), Slankamen , Berkasovo , Bečkerek (today's Zrenjanin), Irig etc.

He was married to Barbara Frankopan . His most famous military forays were those of 1476 when he conquered Srebrenica . He also led campaigns near Šabac and Smederevo , and in 1480 attacked Sarajevo . Vuk Grgurević died in 1485.
