Franz Babinger

Franz Babinger (born January 15, 1891 in Weiden idOPf. , † June 23, 1967 in Durrës , Albania ) was a German historian and orientalist who made a special contribution to the field of Ottoman studies .

Life

After completing his studies, he received his doctorate in 1914 at the University of Munich and, after participating in the First World War in the Ottoman army, his habilitation at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin in 1921 . Here he was then appointed professor . After the takeover by the Nazis in 1933, he was forced to give up his place, but he found through the help of Nicolae Iorga a job in Bucharest . From 1948 to 1958 he taught at the University of Munich. Even after his retirement he continued his work and published other works. He drowned in an accident in Albania in 1967 .

He was particularly successful in indexing sources on Ottoman history from Italian archives. He was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei , the Göttingen Academy of Sciences , the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society .

He was married to Margot geb. Nail.
