The University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt , or ULB for short , was founded in Halle (Saale) in 1696 as a university library . With 5.55 million holdings, it is the largest general scientific library in Saxony-Anhalt today .
history
The history of the university and state library is closely linked to the history of the University of Halle. The library was founded in 1696 just two years after the University of Halle was founded. After the Wittenberg University was merged with the University of Halle to form the United Friedrichs University of Halle-Wittenberg, parts of the Wittenberg University Library (founded in 1502) were transferred to the Halle University Library in 1817/1818.
Between 1878 and 1880 the new warehouse building (today's August-Bebel-Straße 50) is built. In 1948 the additional tasks of a state library were transferred and then the central catalog Saxony-Anhalt was set up. Electronic cataloging began in 1991, and in 1992 the university and state libraries were integrated into the Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt catalog network (from 1995, the joint library network - GBV).
In 2000 the Academic Senate of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg passed the regulations of the ULB.
main building
The main building was built in 1878 by Ludwig von Tiedemann as a warehouse building. It is located near the university campus . The functional solution of separating literature storage and use was exemplary for the time. The richly structured clinker brick facade conceals a screwed cast iron construction that anticipated elements of the later industrial architecture. The main reading room is on the first floor. The handset contains around 10,000 volumes.
Stocks
The approximately 5.55 million inventory units of the University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt are housed in the main building and in 13 branch libraries. These include 24,203 newspapers and magazines that are kept up-to-date, but also important special collections. The riches also include over 115,000 manuscripts and autographs and 1,600 incunabula (prints before 1500). The old library holdings with almost 500,000 volumes up to the year of publication 1899 contain valuable French and Dutch prints from the 17th and 18th centuries and encyclopedias from the Enlightenment period.
The main focus of the institution is a. the DFG - Specialized Information Service Middle East, North Africa and Islamic Studies as well as the regional studies and regional history of Saxony-Anhalt. On the basis of the State Press Act (Section 11), the library receives a deposit copy of every printed work published in Saxony-Anhalt .
One of the special collections is the library of the Morgenländische Gesellschaft (founded in 1845) with treasures such as the first German translation of the Koran from Arabic and early works of oriental studies from the 17th century. The Ponickausche library with manuscripts and prints on Saxon history, the Hungarian library and the observatory library with holdings from the Halle observatory, which was dissolved in 1923 .
