Driving safety training

Driving safety training
Driving safety training with commercial vehicles

As a driver safety training (short SHT ), special training for drivers of motor vehicles designated. The training courses for different vehicles are usually held in a driving safety center .

From a historical perspective, driver safety training is a component of road safety work, the basis of which was laid in the early 1970s by ADAC , traffic guards and automobile manufacturers. In the years that followed, the training processes of the so-called “skidding courses” were further developed, expanded by various modules and introduced in 1975 under the name “DVR safety training”.

The participants should be able to recognize dangers in road traffic in good time through the courses and avoid them by driving ahead. One aim of the courses is to enable participants to cope with critical situations through knowledge and vehicle control. In addition, the aim is to raise awareness of how modern vehicle technology works (e.g. ABS, ESP, ASR, driver assistance systems ). The objective is:

"Recognize dangers, avoid dangers, master dangers."

organizer

The sponsorship of the driver safety training, according to the guidelines of the DVR , is shared by over 30 organizers in Germany, mainly the ADAC : with approx. 60 training places and the traffic watch as organizer for the professional associations as part of the accident prevention training. The trainers or moderators of the courses are specially trained by the respective organizer, as licensees of the DVR, and must be certified by them. More than 100,000 course participants are counted every year on over 80 training places. In Austria, safety training is offered by the ÖAMTC and various qualified driving schools.

Car SHT

Depending on the previous knowledge of the course participants, the driver safety training is graded into different levels of difficulty (e.g. advanced course, advanced, perfection training, etc.). The training always begins with a theoretical introduction to the program. The knowledge and wishes of the participants, the driving physics , the current vehicle technology ( anti-lock braking system , electronic stability control ) and their limits are particularly addressed. An investigation by DEKRA showed that the irrigated exercise areas did not result in any measurable tire wear on the vehicles; with the emergency braking exercises on dry surfaces, the wear and tear would be assumed to correspond to a normal driving distance of approx. 500 km. In car SHT, the proportion of men dominates at 75.5%.

Before starting the journey, the correct seating position is checked against the background of optimal vehicle control and the possible risk of injury from the airbag :

  • Backrest at an angle of 110 ° (explanation of the term submarining )
  • Hold your arms at a 90 ° angle to the steering wheel

In small groups with a maximum of 12 participants, the practical experience of driving physics z. B. performed in the following exercises:

  • Full braking with the so-called "buffalo step" (in vehicles with brake assist , the hazard warning lights come on when the brakes are correctly applied )
  • "Experiencing" the braking distance at different speeds and road surfaces
  • Braking and evasive maneuvers on different road surfaces and in front of a wall of water (effective steering angle, "steering wheel tearing")
  • Circular travel with provoked understeer or oversteer by the accelerator pedal
  • Slalom and cornering with regard to "eye training" and steering wheel position (quarter to 3)
  • Simulation of an erupting tail after driving over the dynamic plate (sling plate) and subsequent interception of the car
  • Reverse around obstacles

Motorcycle SHT

The motorcycle driving safety training was first carried out in 1978. While the first stage of the motorcycle SHT was designed by the ADAC, further development was carried out by the Institute for Two-Wheeler Safety from the perspective of education and psychology. The DVR is responsible for the third stage, which has been in effect since 1999. From 1979 to 2003, 183,346 motorcyclists took part in driver safety training. The age group from 35 to 65 years represents the largest contingent. Depending on the driver's previous knowledge, the courses are divided into introductory, basic, intensive and perfection training; Day trips are also offered after training.

This is done to warm up

  • "Motorbike gymnastics" (standing, one-legged, sitting on the tank, etc.), then
  • extreme slow travel for balance training,
  • Slalom rides ("Schwingtechnik"),
  • Circular trips (primarily the eye training and "head posture"),
  • Braking exercises (full braking to a standstill) and
  • Braking and evasive exercises ("steering impulse technology").

Motorcycle SHT in real traffic

In addition to classic motorcycle safety training (MST), a new form of SHT has been developed: safety tours in real traffic. In order to make this new type of SHT known, the Accident Research of the Insurers (UDV) together with the German Road Safety Council and the magazines "Tourenfahrer" and "Motorradfahrer" launched the German Safety Tour. Every year, 10 motorcycle safety tours with 10 participants each take place at GST. "Training" takes place at GST during a group excursion. At the stations of a tour, specific practical driving exercises are carried out under the guidance of the trainer to improve vehicle control. A crucial part of the tour is the observation of yourself and others during the excursions. The participants are given tasks to control the observations. You should z. B. pay particular attention to the course of the road or vehicles in cross traffic. Video recordings made during the tour are also evaluated. In this way, the safety tour is intended to promote the participants' ability to act, which is necessary for a safety-oriented, defensive driving style in road traffic. Social aspects of traffic behavior are given particular weight.

The DVR had the "Training in Real Traffic" certified and is in the process of developing a manual for moderators so that the GST content can be offered as "Training in Real Traffic" throughout Germany in the future.

Lean angle training

Motorcycle banking training

In order to alleviate the fear of a steep incline, there is the possibility of completing an incline training in locked areas. A specially converted motorcycle, with two side arms, prevents it from tipping over in an inclined position. The possible roll angle is variably adjustable; 5 degree steps from 20 degrees to 55 degrees are common. Lean angle training is offered by various providers as a supplementary course as part of driver safety training. Motorcycles with anti-fall devices (side arms) have been known since the first attempts at driving with anti-lock braking systems .

Other vehicles

  • Transporter: braking, braking and evasive exercises, load securing
  • Trucks: Brakes, braking and evasive exercises, load securing, maneuvering exercises
  • Bus: braking, braking and evasive exercises, maneuvering exercises
  • Tank truck: tipping limit when cornering
  • Off-road vehicle: tipping limit in the field, ascent and descent
  • Camping vehicles: Special training for teams or mobile homes
  • Emergency vehicle: For vehicle emergency vehicles, see vehicle exercises, truck emergency vehicles, see truck exercises
  • Bodyguards : separate training

Exercises in energy-saving driving are part of a separate training course.

Track record

Statistical surveys by various companies showed a significant reduction in accidents and a noticeable reduction in fuel consumption for participants in driver safety training after participating in “eco-training”.
