The Accident Research of Insurers (UDV) is part of the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV). It is committed to improving safety and accident prevention on German roads through research , advice , cooperation and public relations work and cooperates with decision-makers in politics at national and European level, with responsible authorities and the police as well as vehicle manufacturers . It keeps information ready for all groups of road users and advises the accident commissions nationwide .

With 19 employees, the UDV is one of the largest clients for university and non-university traffic safety research in Germany.

tasks

The UDV successfully participates in various initiatives to reduce the risk of accidents on the roads, such as enforcement or development

In doing so , it analyzes real accidents and enters the data obtained into the insurer's accident database (UDB). Due to the comprehensive data analysis , in addition to the causes of accidents, for example, technical safety systems can also be examined for their effectiveness, e.g. B .:

history

As early as the 1950s, German car insurers were committed to improving road safety. The "Advisor for Loss Prevention", which was launched in 1951, became the Loss Prevention Advice Center , which was renamed the Cologne Road Traffic Institute (ISK) in 1997 . In 1969 the office for vehicle technology was established in Munich, which in 1997 became the Institute for Vehicle Safety Munich (IFM). In 2002, the competencies of the Institute for Vehicle Safety in Munich and the Institute for Road Traffic (Cologne) were merged in the Transport Technology Institute of German Insurers (VTIV). In order to meet the new challenges, tasks and objectives even better, the Transport Technology Institute in Berlin became the Accident Research of Insurers (UDV) in 2006 . Siegfried Brockmann has been Head of Accident Research at the insurers since 2006 .

structure

The UDV conducts interdisciplinary research on all aspects of road safety, keeping an eye on people, vehicles and the road. For this she develops holistic concepts. This is reflected in the three areas:

  • Vehicle: z. B. with the accident analysis for different vehicle types and road users to determine necessary measures, the investigation of the effectiveness of passive and active safety systems, the protection of children in the car, the optimization of the rescue of accident victims from vehicles, the improvement of the protection of occupants in buses, the Investigation of accidents between heavy trucks with pedestrians and cyclists, the analysis of accidents with motorcyclists and the effect of optimal protective clothing
  • Street: z. B. with the safety analysis of road networks, the further development of infrastructure measures for pedestrians and cyclists, especially for seniors and children, the evaluation of the effectiveness of speed monitoring measures, the analysis of measures to improve safety on country roads, highways and city streets, as well as the consideration of traffic safety from public transport stops
  • Human: z. B. with school route safety for planners, parents and children, impact analyzes for speed limitation and monitoring, development of safety recommendations for cyclists, motorcyclists and truck drivers, the feedback drive for seniors, the distraction in the vehicle and technical solutions for their avoidance and the reduction of alcohol accidents through alcohol interlock programs

The accident research projects of the insurers are financed by the motor insurers in the GDV.
