Kumberg is a market town with 3840 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) northeast of Graz in the Graz-Umgebung district in the Austrian state of Styria .

Geographical location

Kumberg is located about 15 km northeast of the provincial capital Graz in the Eastern Styrian hill country on the Rabnitzbach , a tributary of the Raab .

The municipality includes the following four localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Gschwendt (933) including Albersdorf, Birleiten, Frindorf, Gstauda, ​​Jassing and Pircha
  • Hofstätten (411) including Grubberg, Hirtenfeldberg, Meierhöfen, Not and Würzelberg

history

The name of the place reminds of its founder Kuno I. von Rott , Count Palatine of Bavaria (1055 - approx. 1086). Kumberg was first mentioned in a document in 1142 and has been a market town since 1964. A strong influx of people into the municipal area began around 1980, as is typical for the municipalities of the Graz area.

  • Kainberg Castle : The Renaissance castle from the 16th century has a remarkable arcade courtyard. As it is privately owned, it is difficult to access.
  • Parish church Kumberg : The new church from 1700 was raised to parish church in 1777. On the outside there is a Roman stone from the 2nd century.
  • Friedwald: Austria's first Friedwald was opened in the Kumberg district in 2012 . This is located in a forest plot on the southeastern foothills of the Schöckl . The Friedwald is open to all denominations. In addition to a sign on the tree in question, a central place of worship was also set up.

The Weizer Straße (B 72) from Graz to Weiz runs through the municipality. There is no motorway connection within a 15 km radius - neither to the south motorway (A2) nor to the Pyhrn motorway (A9). The track Straße (B 65) is about 10 km away.

There is no train station in the municipality. The central station Graz is about 18 km, the Weiz station about 15 km away.

The distance to Graz Airport is approx. 30 km.

Well welt Kumberg is a leisure center opened in 1979 with a 1.6 hectare swimming lake and an adjoining camp village as well as restaurants and leisure facilities such as a beach volleyball court or a mini golf course. There is also an archery range and the SV well welt Kumberg football stadium in connection with the well welt.
