Franz Wegart (born July 25, 1918 in Graz ; † January 30, 2009 there ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). Trail type was long-time Member of the Styrian parliament , Minister (of 11 April 1961 to 10 December 1971), Governor -Stellvertreter (of 10 December 1971 to 11 January 1985) and President of Parliament (dated 11 January 1985 to 19 October 1993 ) in Styria . Franz Wegart was regional chairman of the ÖVP senior citizens ' union, which has 38,000 members across Styria.

Career

Franz Wegart grew up in Altneudörfl, Styria, near Bad Radkersburg . From 1924 to 1932 he attended school in Radkersburg and then worked as a farm worker in his grandparents' farm . According to his own statements, he was involved in a firefight with illegal Nazis in Halbenrain in 1934 . From 1937 to 1939 he was a member of the Austrian front militia and then in the Reich Labor Service . For six years, he experienced the Second World War almost exclusively at the front. From 1939 to 1945 Wegart was a member of the German Wehrmacht in the 3rd and 5th Mountain Divisions and took part in missions in Greece, Crete, Norway and Russia. In July 1945 the war veteran was released from American captivity and immediately after his return to Radkersburg he became involved in the ÖVP, whose district party secretary he was from September 1945 to June 1946. Wegart then became state party secretary (1947–1961), member of the Styrian state parliament (from 1949), managing director of the Austrian publishing house (1955–1981), from 1961 a member of the state government and from December 1971 deputy governor. From January 1985 to October 1993 Wegart was President of the Styrian Landtag.

Franz Wegart was also regional chairman of the ÖAAB from May 1964 to May 1987 and since 29 September 1988 regional chairman of the Styrian Seniors' Union. From November 1988 to October 1992 he was also federal chairman of the Austrian Seniors' Union . The politician also held numerous functions in other bodies.

In 1969 Wegart founded the Dr. Karl Kummer Institute for Social Reform, Social and Economic Policy in Styria; until 1979 he was its chairman and between 1979 and 2007 president of this institution. After completing this function, Wegart was elected honorary president of the institute.

Wegart was also the only honorary member of the Styrian Military Command and was awarded the Military Merit of the Austrian Armed Forces .

In his home town of Radkersburg and in around 100 other Styrian communities, Franz Wegart was an honorary citizen and honorary ring holder.

Wegart was married for 37 years, widowed since 1990 and had one son.
