Waltraud Klasnic [ klasnik ] (born October 27, 1945 in Graz , as Waltraud Tschiltsch, later adopted Mlinaritsch ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). From 1996 to 2005 she was the first woman in Austria to be Governor of Styria .

Political career

Klasnic joined the Austrian Women's Movement , an organization of the ÖVP , in 1970 and was involved here and later also in the Wirtschaftsbund (also an ÖVP sub-organization). Politically, she was a member of the Federal Council from 1977 to 1981 , then moved to the Styrian Landtag and became 3rd President of the Landtag in 1983  . In 1988 she became regional councilor for economy, tourism and transport and from 1993 at the same time deputy governor of Styria. From 1990 to 1997 she was regional group leader of the Wirtschaftsbund, from March 1996 to March 2006 she was regional party leader of the Styrian People's Party.

Governor

Since the ÖVP was barely able to hold first place in the state elections in 1995 , Josef Krainer junior resigned and proposed Regional Councilor Gerhard Hirschmann as his successor. She was elected Governor of Styria on January 23, 1996 and thus became the first head of Austria. Unlike Gabi Burgstaller , who was elected as Salzburg Governor eight years later , Klasnic attached great importance to being addressed as "Frau Provincial Governor".

In the state elections in 2000 , the ÖVP was able to gain more than 11 percent, it only missed an absolute majority in the state parliament by one mandate, which it received in the state government, which was occupied on a proportional basis . During her time as governor, the "Autocluster Styria" was set up, in which small and medium-sized suppliers were specially promoted around the leading company Magna Steyr .

Then she got hit by a scandal at the state energy supplier ESTAG and after the failure of a motorsport project on the A1-Ring in Spielberg , after the audit court report on the Herberstein Zoo in August 2005 and due to the fact that her former party colleague Hirschmann ran his own list in the subsequent state election , more and more under pressure. In the state elections on October 2, 2005 , the Styrian People's Party lost over eight percent of the votes and the majority in the state government, whereupon Klasnic announced on the evening of the election day that he would no longer be a member of the future state government or the state parliament. Her successor in the state government was Hermann Schützenhöfer as the leading representative of the ÖVP, who became deputy governor. Her successor as governor was Franz Voves (SPÖ) on October 25, 2005 .

Activities since 2006

Since her retirement from professional politics, Klasnic has been involved on a voluntary basis, among other things, as Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Future Fund of the Republic of Austria (2006 to January 2011) and as President of the umbrella organization Hospice Austria. Klasnic has been a member of the European Economic and Social Committee since 2006. She was also a consultant for socio-economic issues in the Magna group Frank Stronachs and founded the consulting company Dreischritt GmbH in 2007 with her long-time employee Herwig Hösele .

In March 2010 Klasnic was appointed victim commissioner for the Austrian Catholic Church. In this position she heads a commission which is supposed to guarantee the independence of the investigation of current cases of abuse of children by members of the Catholic Church in Austria. Representatives of the platform for victims of church violence are skeptical of this decision and question the independence of the announced office.

In June 2012, Waltraud Klasnic was appointed by the Senate of the Montan University Leoben as a member of the University Council for the period from 2013 to 2018.

In 2017, the ÖSV brought in Klasnic as a victim protection officer after the former skier Nicola Werdenigg reported on several sexual assaults in the area around the ÖSV in the 1970s.

Private

After training in the specialist trade, she and her husband set up a transport company. Waltraud Klasnic is widowed (her husband Simon died in 2015) and has three children and five grandchildren.
