State election in Styria 1995
State elections were held in Styria on December 17, 1995 .
The ÖVP was the big loser of the election and fell to a record low since 1945. Although it remained the party with the strongest vote and was still able to provide the governor, Josef Krainer junior , who was the top candidate, decided to resign and proposed Waltraud Klasnic as his successor, whereupon she took office in March 1996.
The SPÖ won a few votes, reached 35.9%, with 21 mandates, and thus drew level with the ÖVP. This got 36.3% of the vote. The FPÖ grew and achieved 17.2% and thus 10 mandates.
After three different green and alternative lists stood in the state elections in 1991 and failed to enter the state parliament, in 1995 the only party The Greens - The Green Alternative received 4.3% of the votes (2 seats). The Liberal Forum , which took place for the first time and obtained a basic mandate in Graz, also entered the state parliament with 3.84% and two mandates.
Neither the list of citizens 'initiative WIR for Styria - NO to the EU (1.01% of the votes) nor the Austrian Motorist and Citizens' Interests Party with 0.94% were able to win state parliament mandates. The KPÖ failed to make it into the state parliament again with 0.57%.
The turnout fell from 89.60% (1991) to 86.92%.
