On March 15, 1970, state elections were held in Styria .

The ÖVP held its position as the party with the highest number of votes and seats in Styria, but lost the absolute majority of seats despite slight gains. Josef Krainer senior (ÖVP) remained governor.

The ÖVP received 48.6% of the votes (28 seats), the SPÖ received 44.7% of the votes and thus 26 seats. The FPÖ retained its position as the third largest party with 5.3% (2 seats), the communists and left-wing socialists ( KPÖ ) lost a lot and failed to make it into the state parliament with 1.4%.

The National Democratic Party , which appeared for the first time , only ran in two of the four constituencies and only received 0.08% of the vote.
