On October 8, 1978, state elections were held in Styria .

The ÖVP won the elections and was able to hold an absolute majority despite losing votes, while the FPÖ won slightly and the SPÖ suffered slight losses.

51.9% of the votes (30 mandates) meant an absolute majority for the ÖVP. The SPÖ was able to hold its 23 mandates with 40.3%, while the FPÖ was able to win one mandate with 6.4% (3 mandates).

The KPÖ again failed to make it into the state parliament with 1.33%.
