The state elections in Styria in 1985 took place on March 14, 1965.

The ÖVP further expanded its leading position in Styria and for the first time since the state elections in 1945 it achieved an absolute majority. Josef Krainer senior (ÖVP) strengthened his position as governor.

The ÖVP received 48.4% of the votes (29 seats), the SPÖ got 42.2% of the votes and thus 24 seats. The third strongest party remained the FPÖ despite a loss of votes with 5.8% (2 seats), the Communists and Left Socialists ( KPÖ ) achieved one seat with 3.2%.

The Liberal Party of Austria ran for the first time, and with 0.33% it clearly failed to make it into the state parliament. The Independent Styrian Home List only appeared in the constituency of Graz and the surrounding area, it only achieved 0.07% of the votes.
